    Stupid Question: Gift Cards

    Stupid question but here goes:

If you have a gift card for a certain store for let's say $100, can you purchase something that's $150 by using the $100 gift card and paying $50 (cash, credit card, check)?

Or does the value of the gift card have to be higher than the price of the product you are buying?

    I've always wondered this.

Excuse my ignorance in the art of shopping

Yes, you can do that. A gift card can pretty much be used for the entire purchase or as a "discount", in which you would pay the last $50 in cash/check/card

I give out a lot of gift cards to people at work. For wedding gifts, baby showers, b-days or whatever. I don't like to give gift cards to specific storeS (wal-mart, target, blockbuster, etc.) I usually just stop at Wal-Greens and pickup a American Express gift card so they can buy from whatever store they want (well as long as the store accepts AMEX).

I usually buy Walmart or Target GCs. Those 2 are everywhere.

Also emailing Amazon GCs is a nice option as well.

Our local mall has their own gift cards you can purchase which are usable in ANY store in the entire mall. These are great gift cards.

I don't care for gift cards, they don't work half the time, especially walmart gift cards. And some credit card gift cards charge fees if it isn't used within a certain time frame.

Weird. Never had a problem with one. I use them 1-2 times a week to save 3 cents off each gallon.

Stores love them b/c they get the money up front and a lot of times never get redeemed.

Yeah the magnetic strip on walmart gift cards are very fragile, more fragile then other cards. I have seen many times when people be in front of me in line trying to use a gift card and their reader won't pick up the strip.

What is even worse that half of walmart cashiers don't get properly trainned and don't even know how to manually key in a gift card or credit card and you have to wait 20 minutes for an assistant manager or csm to key it in for them.

I remember one time I keyed it in for the cashier girl myself LOL.

Sorry for the extremely lame joke, I haven't had time to eat all day and so it's hilarious to me.

Those things were a little tricky from what I remember in my Sam's Club days. I know I stumbled and bumbled my way through a couple.

The money you think you save pretty much evens out because WM uses the lowest quality of gas allowed and you will get 1-2 mpg less.
