The local Kroger sells the patties for like $4 for two of em (about 1/2 pound each), or sometimes cheaper with the "manager's discount". Highly recommended!

Since they're back, Hostess fried pies vs their replacement, Tastykake. My Kroger had their singles display in store finally, so I grabbed a cherry pie and the equivalent Tastykake cherry pie. Even before I got them out of the package I knew there was a problem with the Hostess, it felt soft and soggy. But, we go on anyway. Once opened it looked OK, it looked like a Hostess pie of old, but there was still something soft about it.



Kind of hard to tell from the picture, but the Hostess pie had a caved in quality in the back.



The Tastykake had a bit of a sidewall problem, but we'll forgive it I guess.



Cut in half and, Houston I think we have a problem. The inside of that Hostess pie is PALE. It's even worse than the picture as the camera corrected the colors some, even the camera couldn't believe it was so pale.



Eating the first half of both, the Hostess is downright disgusting. It has very little, if any, cherry flavor and instead has this weird bitter sour quality that gets you in the back of the tongue and jaw muscles. besides the flavor, the pie is as I feared, soggy and flabby. There also wasn't a single cherry in the half I ate. The Tastykake was great, the crust was flaky and not at all soggy, the insides has fruit and a good cherry flavor.

Scraping out the insides of both pies, you can see the much too pale Hostess filling, it even looks light for a strawberry filling, never mind cherry.



So that's where all the cherries went in the hostess, must have been shipped sideways.



Completely and utterly tasteless. The crust, though, was unfortunately not tasteless, it still had the bitter, sour, chemical taste.

Verdict? Stay away from the Hostess, at least until they fix them. Even after they do fix them, I'm not so sure Tastykake won't still be better.





Actually, you should probably stay away from both, but *** **** they are good...the Tastykake anyway.

Canadians and your gravy. Only type of steak I'd put gravy on is chicken fried. A good ribeye... with gravy? That's just, well, different.
