Re: Big Green Eggs
Mine is like this. I added a high quality thermometer, sealed the lid with fiberglass rope so no smoke can leak around seal(much easier to maintain your temp). Then drilled and added some exhaust vents at the bottom similar to this one. Removed the electronics and made it a charcoal. Since charcoal is the way to go for sure.

Re: Big Green Eggs
I have heard good things fish. I never used one. I instead took a cheap electric lowes smoker and did a couple mods to make it much better. Works wonderfully.

Re: Big Green Eggs
I heard great things about them. Only thing that turns me off is you paying alot for the name. It is a solid unit, but not worth the $500-$700 price tag. Not when you can take a $150 unit and do $50 bucks of modifications to make it the same quality as the green egg IMO.Comment

Re: Big Green Eggs
I am at work.
But this is the exact unit. Really cheap. Just removed the electronics. Place a stainless rack at the bottom. Excellent unit that maintains temp for hours and hours.
I then installed a high quality thermometer such as this, right where the rack is. To give the most accurate temp reading.
Then installed some fiber glass rope. Like what is around your oven door to seal the lid good and tight. It does not burn so it will last the life of the smoker.
Nothing beats a good water smoker.

Re: Big Green Eggs
Ooh, that's a damn good idea Phobia... I've been thinking about getting a smoker (would probably use that more than an actual charcoal grill ha), and that sounds like a way to get a bad-*** smoker for a cheapo one's price. I'll check into it...Send your Midnight Release weirdo pics/videos to my new website: http://www.peopleofmidnightreleases.com!Comment

Re: Big Green Eggs
This link kind of gives a break down of the mods. Pretty much exactly what I did
Some pictures of fiber glass rope sealing the lid
Final product lol

Re: Big Green Eggs
I know I like to sit outside and drink while smoking, but the heat here in Louisiana drives me inside to drink now that it is summer.
Best thing you can get with your smoker
That way you don't have to keep removing the lid. You want to keep the temp solid as much as possible.Last edited by Phobia; 07-23-2010, 05:36 PM.Comment

Re: Big Green Eggs
Oh and my experience I would suggest staying away from the wood chip boxes. The metal normally does not get hot enough to make the chips smoke. Even if they are dry, soaked it is never going to happen. I am not sure if the box i have the walls are just to thick or what. But I tend to have a much much better experience with taking my chips. Soaking them, wrapping them in foil and popping holes on the bottom, then slightly opening the top facing up. I guess because the foil is thinner so the wood gets hotter.
Nay
This works much better

Re: Big Green Eggs
I have one of those that I left electric, I have a Char-Griller for charcoal. It does a good job on electricity.Comment

Re: Big Green Eggs
To convert it to charcoal is really simple.
Drill holes in the side and put some decent length bolts through in 3 or 4 spots. This is what your rack of coals will sit on. Only difference I suggest that this pic does not show. Is you cut that grey pan completely around about the height of where those bolts are. So basically you have a ring with no bottom. Then the bottom of your smoker is the pan with the hole at the bottom to allow the air flow.
Place your stainless rack down and now you have plenty of air flow beneath for your coals
Pop you a hole on the bottom of the pan, with a slide adjust to allow how much air flow you want. Boom charcoal ready.
