Chicago OSers your help is wanted

I just moved to Waukegan last week for my new duty station and would love if some fellow OSers who are from or live in the Chicagoland area can give me some good advice on things to do, places to see, places to eat, etc.

I was here 3 years ago for my training so I went to the city a few times and went to the Navy Pier, Sears Tower, and Lincoln Zoo.

I'm interested in good food and drinks, comedy, shows, sports, really anything.

I'm going to Wrigley Field next weekend when the Reds are in town, would it be a bad idea to drive there from the North? Is there adequate parking or should I just take the train.

Also if anyone from Milwaukee reads this or if you have any advice on fun things to do in Milwaukee or Wisconsin that would be cool too since it's not that far from me.

    Thanks!

I always rather take my car then take the train. Train be way over crowded and half the time the ac don't work on the train. Far as things to do, downtown is the ideal place to go. Or you could always go out to Gurnee, IL.

Like any major city, especially outside of the downtown areas of chicago, treat everybody like a threat, especially the females. There are 5 times more fine arse female theives in chicago then there are males.

Sit back and relax........Chicago news is very funny and entertaining. They always fighting and arguing over something EVERY day in the newspapers, on tv and on the radio stations.

Well you just missed The Taste of Chicago......but Jazzfest will be coming up pretty soon.

Well since you're in Waukegan I believe you have no choice but to use your car, I dont believe Metra goes that far north.

Also there is very limited parking at Wrigley, you got to get there quite early to find parking.

I there is a metra to waukegan, then get familiar with the L, it will take you anywhere you want to go.
Don't you EVER read my blog? It's gotten a lot better.

If you're by Milwaukee and the Brewers are in town, go. Take the Miller brewery tour a few hours before the game. You'll get free beer during it and at the end. After that, head to Kelly's Bleachers down the road for a couple. Then head across the freeway to the parking lot early. Walk around and strike up conversations with all the tailgaters. You'll get free food and drinks, guaranteed.

It's a great time down there for Brewers games.

Then if you're still up for it, hit up the bar scene downtown, especially Water St. There's a couple of nice microbreweries around there.

Limited parking at Wrigely yeah, but the Cubs also rents out half of Lane Tech's parking lot and half of Devry's parking lot too for people to park their cars at. Then they have a shuttle bus from those parking lots to the stadium.

Yes it does, I used the metra when I was up here before. Yea getting to know all the train routes is going to suck.

Awesome. I'll have to see if the Reds are back in Milwaukee again and to go a game up there. My father-in-law has been to a few Brewers games and he told me it is a blast.

Gon' ahead and take a trip up to Lambeau Field while you're out there as well. Shouldn't be that far of a drive from where you're at.

4-5 hours for him. It takes us 3 1/2 to go from Kenosha to Green Bay for some Packer games.

This thread has reminded me that I need to get out to Chi-town and visit my brother. Looked into tickets and they're not too bad - $285 round trip. United just opened up a direct route to Duluth, so the flight is only an hour and 10 mins. Sure beats a 7 hour drive by myself.

Will probably be going for the October 24 Bears game since my he offered to buy me a ticket (my b-day is the 27th). Anyone know of anything under the radar happening around that time down there? My brother lives in Lincoln Park and doesn't have a vehicle, so we're limited to public transport.

Here's a post I made about my trip to Chicago last year.

That whole thread is full of good stuff.

Here's the thread for my KC/STL/CHI trip. Lots of suggestions in there too.

Also, try to get to Hot Doug's. It's a hot dog/fries/sausage place that fries their fries with duck fat (!) on Saturdays. My buddies and I went up there, paid for cab and everything, and saw it was closed for maintanence when we got there. It's a place that everyone seems to go crazy for. Shame we couldn't get to eat it. Check em out online, read up.
