    OS Woodworkers...need your opinion/help!

So I am getting ready to buy a new tv but am wanting to make a stand/shelf for it to sit on so i can have my xbox and gf's wii below the tv (currently they stand beside the tv, but its a corner area and if i make a place for them to lay under the tv i can go bigger on the tv)

I need to know, what material should I use? I'm considering MDF, but have done a lot of reading about it being tough on blades, I am planning on going into work on my days off and using their tools (assuming my boss approves, otherwise I'll be borrowing some from someone) so I dont want to ruin any blade that is not my own. So basically is there another wood that would be better on blades and hold up as well as MDF, or should I just bite the bullet and buy a cheap blade specifically for MDF?

Here is a rough sketch of what I'm looking to do. the finished product will be painted to match whats currently there. its a corner fireplace with room for the tv above it.

For a single, small project like this, don't even worry about the impact to the blade. As long as you plan on painting the unit, go with MDF. You know that every piece will be uniform (now bow's, etc.) and it cuts easy and clean and paints up nice.

My father in law and I used it to build a built in for all his tv accessories and it turned out well.

Just remember to wear a particle mask...the binding agent in MDF should not be inhaled.

Just wanted to post showing my latest work, a bar I made for a friend. I've done a few small things since the tv shelf, but this is the biggest i've done...turned out well.
