Cheating scandal at U.S. Open rocks bass-fishing community

A professional angler found to have stuffed lead sinkers down the throats of fish he submitted for weigh-ins during a prestigious bass-fishing tournament has been banned for life from that and other competitions in a scandal that has rocked the tight-knit and passionate bass-fishing community.

Mike Hart, a successful Southern California pro whose career earnings total more than $200,000, was accused of cheating in this manner during the recent $100,000 U.S. Open held at sprawling Lake Mead on the Nevada-Arizona border. An official with the Western Outdoor News bass tour said Hart confessed after he was caught virtually red-handed.

i wonder how many times he's gotten away with this. you'd think at least a couple since he was confident enough to put weights in ALL of his fish.

it's ironic that he got found out by a charity event.

This is nothing new cheating in fishing tournaments happens all the time. The good ones don't get caught. The thing is he went through the mouth with the weight they key to not getting caught is to go through the gills and not deep. Don't ask how i know or any competitions I may have been in.

Cheating is for cowards. If you aren't good enough to catch the biggest fish, then you don't deserve to win. Why is that so hard to figure out. I'm not sure why I'm so mad about reading this thread, but this really ticks me off. Unbelievable that someone would cheat at a fishing event and then basically steal $4,000 worth of cash and prizes from someone who should've actually won.

                Unreal.

Anyone else think it's hilarious the phrase "rocks bass-fishing community" as if there's a big village of bass fishers that live in some wooded area together..

I think the idea of a bass-fishing tournament is fairly dumb to begin with.

How much skill is really involved in taking a boat out onto a lake with a fishing rod and reeling in some bass?

People have been cheating at everything for thousands of years.../random statement of fact that I have no idea is true or not

Everyone does it. That is what happens in a lot of these type of contest. Come fish a deep sea rodeo sometime and you will see what types of things go on. If cheating is for cowards then every sport in this world is full of nothing but cowards cause they all cheat at some point and time and in some kind of way.

They are going to have to start xraying the fish

Most of these contest will gut the fish to check for such as this. Which is why the gill trick is a good idea. Thats for the large deep sea fish that I catch I dont know much about fresh water bass.

Not everyone cheats. I don't cheat. If I'm not as good as the next guy, then he just beats me and it motivates me to get better, not to cheat. Just like mom used to say, "If everyone jumps off a bridge are you going to?" Just because "everyone" does it, doesn't mean I will do it, and doesn't mean it is right. I'll probably say things that will get me banned if I keep going, so I'll leave it at this.
