Are athletes celebrities?

By this I mean, what do you guys consider celebrities

Actors and Actresses?
Music business

What is the criteria, they have to be well known, covered on tv/internet
Gossip media

Hollywood actors and actresses get all those things. Musicians/artists/rappers to a lesser extent but there are a lack of pro athletes in gossip media unless it's a serious scandal

Hypothetical Nobody talks about what LeBron James is getting to eat in South Beach in US magazine

If you on tv and for that matter youtube sometimes lead to people getting on to a news show and making them a celeb.......you automatically get celebrity status. I mean look at that Chocolate Rain kid, he had his 15 minutes of fame. Justin Beiber started off on youtube.

That mobile, alabama guy Anotine Dodson or something like that, got his 15 minutes of fame.

So yeah atheletes are celebs. They can't walk no where without being mobbed by cameras and fans.

Some Athletes are bigger than TV/Film celebs in my opinion. See MJ as an example.

Well, outside of Basketball fans who really knows who Chris Bosh is? If my Mom or any non-BBall fan saw him out in a restaurant she wouldn't know him from Adam. Therefore he is a C list celeb in my book. Now George Clooney or Brad Pitt on the other-hand....
