Rowling did nothing wrong and I’m glad she’s stuck to her opinion for once.

Her like every other celebrity on the planet has apologized for things in the past that they shouldn’t have apologized for. I’m surprised she didn’t when this whole thing started but good for her. Nice to see someone with a backbone.

I just finished Smart Baseball by Keith Law. I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for an introductory text to contemporary baseball.

He explains why Wins, Saves, RBI's and Fielding Percentage at bad stats. The myth of the clutch hitter and lineup protection. Then he explains some of the "newer" stats like wOBA, WRC and WAR. He also discusses the Hall of Fame, scouting and Statcast.

She hasn't exactly walked back past comments and she doesn't seem like the type to make a shallow apology statement either.

Sure, she did nothing wrong, but she continues to disconnect herself from her audience with some truly puzzling opinions. It just seems like a weird hill to die on when it has absolutely no affect on her.

Either way - I never really got the "diversity" of Harry Potter. Most of the inclusion came from the movies and JK "retconning" character backgrounds by basically saying, "sure, that's what I meant" to fan theories and ideas.

I feel like Harry Potter is at the beginning stages of setting up its EU. There's the Cursed Child BS and then the Fantastic Beasts movies. They could be doing more with the IP for sure.

Fantastic Beasts is no more EU to me than the prequels. She still wrote the book and the movies. It’s not happening outside of her.

Forgot she wrote the second movie.

It's crazy how much they haven't done with the IP (outside of the movies basically just a theme park?) and it is still a powerhouse.

There's definitely demand for an EU, though. BingeMode has been "pushing" for a Law & Order Auror show since they covered the books a couple years.

Next book Im reading is The Complete Works of William Shakespeare. This is going to take some time and Ive only read a few of these back in high school. Should be an interesting journey.

I want to do a Shakespeare run after I get out of school again, seems like there would be a lot of context for stories in general to get out of there.

I read Hitler Ascent 1889-1939 by Volker Ullrich and really enjoyed it. His 2nd book Hitler Downfall 1939-1945 is coming out Sept 1.

If you're a Star Wars fan Ian Doescher has done treatments of the prequel and original trilogies (maybe even the sequel trilogies now) in Shakespeare fashion. They were actually quite enjoyable. I thought they would be more novelty than anything else and while that's definitely there it is a fun, entertaining read.

Re: OS Book Club Pt II

Been craving superhero stuff something serious, started looking for any information on when the 3rd book in V.E. Schwab's villain series is coming out and saw no news, looked to see if there were any good superhero novels other than those and nothing seemed to scratch the itch so I ended up going through comic volumes. I was just kinda going through the motions with the first 3, and then the 4th one reminded me why I love these things in the first place.

                              Superman: Birthright by Mark Waid
Not much to say about this one. I love Superman so I'm well aware of his origin, didn't expect to be blown away but I have a lot more experience with the characters through TV (the 90's animated series, JL and JLU) than comics so I figured I'd give this a try because it is pretty highly recommended. I just thought it was ok.

Superman: Red Son by Mark Millar
I was really hyped for this one and ended up kinda disappointed because it felt like a missed opportunity. It doesn't really get deep enough into the idea of a Soviet Superman for me. Definitely a cool idea but felt undercooked.

Ultimate Spider-Man Vol. 1 by Brian Michael Bendis
The first 7 editions of Ultimate Spider-Man, pretty much Spider-Man's origin...If I was in some kind of accident and lost all of my memory at this point I think I'd remember the beats of Spider-Man's origins even after I forgot my own name. Not their fault I guess. Going to keep going in the series, at least for a few volumes and see how it goes. Might end up skipping to the Miles era.

                              All-Star Superman by Grant Morrison
"And if the word integration means anything, this is what it means: that we, with love, shall force our brothers to see themselves as they are, to cease fleeing from reality and begin to change it. For this is your home, my friend, do not be driven from it; great men have done great things here, and will again, and we can make America what America must become." - James Baldwin
"You have given them an ideal to aspire to, embodied their highest aspirations. They will race, and stumble, and fall and crawl, and curse, and finally they will join you in the sun, Kal-El." - Jor-El
I don't think I ever realized how much Superman means to me until I read this. Actually I think I noticed in the BvS scene where he's floating above the people and they're looking up to him to help them, but this reinforced that feeling. People overstate Superman's powers all the time, but in All-Star Superman it's like what if Superman was as powerful as people seem to think he is? He gets baited into flying into the sun by Lex Luthor and the overload of solar energy into his cells causes them to start deteriorating and he starts dying. The series follows him in his last days as he comes to terms with his own mortality, exposes his identity to Lois, and tries to tie loose ends before his time's up.
Having a character stand for hope basically means they live on the thin line between corny and earnest, and Superman embodies that. Flying into the sun jump starts his powers, making him a genius, to the point where he creates a miniature world without him to see how it would progress and what happens...the writers of Superman end up creating the comic. It's just perfect. In a world without a savior, we create one. Anyone who loves Superman, or the idea of him, would enjoy this. I've been seeing the Superman-Jesus allusions forever, but hadn't realized how much I'd internalized them.

Grant Morrison is great - the All-Star line was hit and miss, but the Superman title was fantastic.

I honestly haven't read many Superman books, but For All Seasons is a favorite of mine. I have the Death of Superman line, but have never gone through them.

I need to get back into reading Spider-Man and restart my Batman Inc read through.
