Nearing the end of "Death and the Conjuror" by Tom Mead. His first novel. If you like John Dickson Carr, Agatha Christie and Conan-Doyle this is a fun read.

It has the feel of those authors meeting up with "The Prestige" and "The Illusionist". His writing style is solid, and I love his pace. I'm not the most focused reader for long stretches, but this book has grabbed me.

I bought Future Value and Inside Game, enjoyed IG, put FV down about a quarter way through and dunno when/if I'll pick it back up.
I've seen the Arm at bookstores and want to eventually read it.

right now I'm rereading Lord of the Rings. first read 'em before they were movies and I always knew I'd get back around to a reread. absolute gold.

Reading War Dogs, a wild, true story about how a couple of young stoners in Miami became big-time gunrunners in the 2000s, even landing a $300 million contract to arm the Afghan army with 100 million rounds of AK-47 ammo before the feds caught up with them (they executed the deal with leftover stocks of Chinese ammunition languishing in Albanian bunkers, in violation of US law barring the purchase of Chinese arms). Laugh-out-loud funny at times, but more seriously, it's an interesting case study of the murky world of arms dealing and how the US government uses these people as middle men for arms transactions before throwing them to the wolves as soon as problems emerge.

Just finished John Grisham's The Judges List. It was riveting up to the very end, I started reading it Monday morning and knocked thru it to Wednesday morning. The only thing I didn't care for was

It concluded with the judge killing himself.

It seemed to me a lame ending it that way. But it was still worth the read tho.

After being told about how good of a book Killers of the Flower Moon is, I finally decided to get around to it before watching the movie. I was shocked at the location of where the story takes place: Fairfax, Oklahoma, where my grandmother was born and raised. I grew up hearing stories about this part of Oklahoma but never about the subject of this book.

Excellent yet tragic read.

After being told about how good of a book Killers of the Flower Moon is, I finally decided to get around to it before watching the movie. I was shocked at the location of where the story takes place: Fairfax, Oklahoma, where my grandmother was born and raised. I grew up hearing stories about this part of Oklahoma but never about the subject of this book.

Excellent yet tragic read.

Hammer, I'm interested as well, but wondering: is it a quick read? These days I'm not into epic slogs as much as I am a few trips to the can kinda things...

I just read Jon Krakauer's "Into Thin Air". In a nutshell, it's a true account of an ill-fated Everest climbing expedition from back in 1996. It took me a few days of reading 1 chapter a night, and then I got to the part where they make their final assault on the Everest peak (about halfway through the book), and I ended up reading the entire rest of the book in 1 sitting. Talk about a page-turner. Highly recommend.

I read it a little over a month ago. Amazed at the amount of research that went into the project and how the author managed to piece everything together to tell a cohesive story. Extremely sad and tragic.
