Anybody know anything about working on a Barge?

So a friend of the family works on one and he told me and a friend of mine if we think we could do it and not make him look bad he would put in a good word for us.

Since we live in Memphis we would be going up and down the mississippi river and from what i understand it will be 28 days on and 28 days off.

We both will be deckhands on the boat and the starting salary is $200 a Day.

So pretty much i was wondering has anybody ever worked on a barge or known anybody to?.

Id love to get some advice. Thanks

I havent ever worked on a barge but being in the Coast Guard Ive talked to some people who have and it can be a tough job. You will work in all kinds of weather and will have some long days. It can be pretty dangerous too. If you are a deckhand you would be doing most of the dirty work.

I doubt it's as bad as being a crab fisherman on Deadliest Catch, but you'll probably work a crapload of hours and do a lot of dirty, grunt work...

You'll probably want to find out from him exactly what your job would be and if you could deal with it...

Anybody have any idea how many deckhands work on a barge at once?.

It's not very hard work, long hours but you have the oppurtunity to move up fast if you want and make a good living
