That is amazing. I wonder how the flies developed that reporductive strategy.

      Re: Zombie Ants!!!

One species laying its eggs inside another unwilling host species is actually more common that you might think among some species of flies and wasps. However, taking control of the hosts nervous system is something straight out of science fiction. Makes me think of headcrab zombies from Half-Life.

        I thought this was fascinating...

"Although the flies only kill a small fraction of ants this way, the ants seem to be so afraid of the flies that their mere presence prevents the ants from collecting food."

That's crazy. I hardly think of these smaller life forms in this way. To know that they are fearful of other insects. It makes sense but I tend to ignore that they could be.
"It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

"You'll not find more penny-wise/pound-foolish behavior than in Major League Baseball." - Rob Neyer

Where is he when the ants need him? He'll come in and open a can on those flies.
