    The Internet and Hate

I'm a big believer in the fact that human nature does not change, meaning we don't see change in how humans behave at their core. We may have cultural differences and stylistic approaches in our behavior, but things like envy, anger, hate, jealousy etc. are core emotions and feelings humans tend to struggle with.

In thinking of that, it seems to me that in the last ten years, especially with the blossoming of internet forums, social networking and comment based blogs, there is a very strong sense of anger and hate. This somewhat concerns me because given the anonymity of the internet, you can drop in, make your comments and then be off. yet, most of the time I see such people engaging in very hateful behavior.

Take for instance the recent release of IE9. I haven't even touched it yet, but I am taking in the different opinions of the new browser and it's as if people have decided that it's of little improvement. It's as if Microsoft has been established as this bad company and they will be damned if they give IE9 any hint of positive endorsement.

The same holds true for gaming, as I'm sure many here are aware. With NBA Elite and NBA 2K on the heels of their releases, I notice some endorsing their preference but can't do so without taking a jab at the other game. You will see something like, "NBA Elite looks below average, sorry Elite, you won't be competing with NBA 2K this year." It's very childish but I'm seeing this among adults, which then leads me into asking, "Is this the character of these people deep down? If given complete secrecy to their identity, will they behave in a more negative way, rather than positive?

A lesson I have learned in recent years is that if you deep down don't want something to succeed, if at the core you have animosity, anger and real hate, you will be so jaded that you can not celebrate the success of that very thing that jaded you. It's as if being jaded reinforces a very unhealthy competition that is not necessary in determining our preferred choice or decision. I often wonder if at the root of such behavior if there is deep envy or jealousy, and perhaps some things fuel those feelings and their response is then based in pure hatred and anger.

While these feelings have always been with us since the beginning, the internet has opened an avenue where the opportunity to move in those feelings is open and can be easily accessed, often making the internet's experience a very sad reflection on our society.
Being kind, one to another, never disappoints.

I don't look at this as being much different than people being fans of their favorite sports team. People have loyalty on things that they have no part in and no control over...just instead of a sports team they don't play for, it's a video game they don't make or a band they don't play in or a TV show they don't write for or produce.

We all do it in one way or another.

Is someone dogging one game for another any different than a Red Sox fan in March saying that they are going to win the AL East and the Yankee's are going to finish in 3rd? But when it comes to sports, these statements are tollerated much more. In reality, it's really the same thing. Loyalty to something, that really doesn't have loyalty to you.

Rationally thinking, one would think that people would only care about playing the best game regardless of whether it was made by 2K, EA, Konami or Joe Shmoe, but we know that regardless of quality, people pick favorites based on the name on the box regardless of the quality of game play. Part of it comes from just being comfortable with the feel of one product and the annoyance that comes with learning the ins and outs of another, but most of it just comes down to being loyal to a company that is taking our money.

It's like going into last Sunday, every football fan in America believed that their team was a playoff team this year...the same goes for video games...this is the year their finally going to get it right...even though they haven't for the last X number of years.

Internet forums are used mostly to express opinions, both positive and negative. Expressing negative opinions about something doesn't necessarily equal anger and hate.

Despite all the awful things we are made aware to on the news and internet, I still have believe the overwhelming majority of humans are more good than bad. Otherwise I think we'd have anarchy.

I really don't see how the two are related. People are people. The only difference is now everybody is more aware of what the masses think. Even though they have always thought that way.

I have to agree...before the internet everyone and their mother didn't have a venue from which to let the world know their feelings...now, they do. And many people (who were previously powerless and voiceless) are letting their opinions be known, fair or not

I don't know about adults acting in such a way though. Sure, I believe there are a minority who do, but I have a hunch most are young people. When I play online it seem the voices of the pre-puberty players are the most hate filled.

I wouldn't confuse voice sounding with age all the time though. Because I have some female friends that sound like a 4 year old on the phone. And one of my co workers sounds like a kid too even though he is 39.

What I do find funny though is when I hear a player talk all that trash during the game, all game long and then out of no where you hear their mom say John did you do your homework ?

I LOL everytime. Be saying to myself this person been talking like a billy bad arse all game long but yet still lives with his mom.....

This might be part of it. Many opinions are formed based off the arguments of others. Everyone has access now.

For instance, I played FIFA 09 throughout that year it was released. I loved it and had little issues with the title. I didn't visit the FIFA forums here, though. So, I got really into it, and for the next game (FIFA 10), I started going into the forum here at OS. The negative comments out-weighed the positive and after a while I started noticing the little bugs and problems when I played the game. Problems I really didn't notice before. It slowly was changing the way I viewed the game.

I'm not knocking the guys here. I should've been able to come up with my own impression of the game and not let an outside source sway what I think of a game that is right in front of me

I think the veil of anonymity is the key. Anyone can say anything, especially things they might never say to someones face. Half the time I think people are only making statements to get a reaction.

It is more fun to just say the stuff most people say online to peoples face and see what kinda reaction you get. If you dont mind getting popped in the jaw a few times give it a shot though.

Agreed. Now you have an audience and no real physical threat of retaliation. The internet is a godsend for idiots/bigots that want to be heard.
