Rust proofing / paint protection etc on cars

My wife is in the process of buying a new car and the prices for all these things at the dealership seem very expensive. Any idea if these things are legit or just a complete scam?

Surely modern cars should come some sort of rust proofing etc as standard?

Scam imo. I live in the Snowiest city in the US which uses salt(Salt causes rust for you southern folks) for the roads and I do not have a speck of rust on my car. Im sure the Dealer will have something that does prevent rust but most car manufacturers rust protection should be enough.

Thanks for posting CF. From looking around the internet that seems to be the general consensus. I mean how often do you see a recent model car with rust on it these days? Never?

Our car will never be driven on a beach / near salt water and we don't have snow / salt used on roads in my part of Australia so it seems like a bit of a waste of money.

They are asking something $400 for "paint protection" but what i can work out that is just a wash and wax that you could do at home. Used car dealers are some dodgy dudes judging by the ones i have been dealing with.

LMAO I thought of David Puddy as well when they were trying to stick us with the add on's.

They are like: "listen I'll do you a great deal and i'll do it for you for this price (insert reasonably good price)"

The next day we get a phone call about delivery fee's, added warranty costs, all these other optional extra's that would have added over 3k to the price. Bastards!

Paint protection film is something that i have applied to every new vehicle that i own. At the very least get the hood kit (also covers part of the front fenders) and possibly the bumper kit as well. This stuff is not a scam, will last for many years and protects from rock chips etc. http://www.xpel.ca/
