Re: CNBC: Best Cities To Relocate To

I've been to Madison, Indianopolis, and Pittsburgh a few times and liked them all.

But I would much rather live in a small boring city then a big city like Chicago or New York.

Oh well, I keep busting their butts about it and nothing gets done. Guess they're content with wasting time, sweat, and money here.
Do you have to move with all or part of your family or are you looking for a place just for yourself?

I like seeing the Twin Cities on the list. My wife and I love the area and hope we can stay once her contract his up.

Whole family would be nice, unless I found a legitimate enough job so I could do it on my own.

You know what pisses me off about that list. When I was in law school we went to Jamaica where I met a lawyer from Wisconsin who offered me a job on the spot after we talked for a while. We decided Wisconsin was too far from family to move to Madison, WI.

            I had hindsight.

It was just an interesting response...thanks for clarifying.

Good luck, you'll escape SoCal eventually!

As a native Vermonter the answer is it depends where you live. In the Burlington area it is awesome, Burlington is almost always amongst the best College Towns in America. From Burlington, Montreal and the legal drinking age of 18 is just 90 minutes away. In Southern Vermont it sucks more than one could imagine.

Buffalo is cool, Niagara falls, NY is a absolute DUMP. I feel bad for honeymooners that go there thinking it is nice and realize their hotel is actually located between a crack house and a garbage dump.

As for Buffalo though, you can substitute Buffalo for Syracuse or Rochester. All former Rustbelt cities that are going through a change from manufacturing to another form of commerce. Syracuse has done a real nice job of getting Green industries and labs to move here and Syracuse University has been pivotal in this area.

Indianapolis area or Twin Cities area are the two of the three choices I'm looking at move to after my school is finished in June. Living in Bloomington MN as a kid put there on the top of my list. The Suburbs of both Indy and TC are good areas with stuff to do if you don't want to go into the city.
I've heard this "patience is a virtue" junk all my life. I'm happy to say I have no virtue, no scruples, and no desire to wait too long for anything. In my humble opinion instant gratification takes too long!

I wonder what the crime rate in Indy is compared to Memphis.

I haven't looked it up but, that's probably the biggest difference between the two.

Hm. I really tend to dislike the TC-area suburbs. I like downtown St. Paul a lot, though. Cosetta's...

Maybe it's because I have friends that live in the north and south suburbs, so whenever I'm down there I end up driving back and forth and it's well over a half hour each way. I guess it all depends on what you're looking for.

Not really......don't be fooled, Indy crime rate is up there, not as high as Memphis, but it is up there. Mainly because a lot of the gangs from Chicago migrated down there to Indy and brought all that criminal elment from Chicago down there with them.

Why I can honestly say, gangs from Chicago migrated damn near everywhere and brought their crime every where they went to. They did to Indy, Cleveland, Milwaukee, Detroit, Memphis, Huntsville, B-ham, Jackson, Dayton, Columbus, Hartford, Groton, Albany, Boston, etc.

Re: CNBC: Best Cities To Relocate To

Ugh, Austin is at the top of all these lists and it's ruining our city. The population here as grown 32% in the last 8 years and it shows. Austinites and Texas people in general are pretty laid back people with proper manners and ettiquette but the more people we get - a large majority coming from both coasts - the more and more the city is becoming a bunch of rude people who are out for themselves and people who don't hold dear anything that is considered sacred in this town.

The city went from nice, lush, safe areas to turning into a concrete jungle - seriously, the city is breaking their necks trying to sell off public land to private companies for tolls upon tolls while we also lose valuable greenbelt and park land. The city's crime rate is rising with heinous acts becoming more and more prevalent, while the police force band-aids it by trying to create a police state with things such as blood testing those who may be suspicious of driving drunk, lowering the tolerable drinking limit from .8 to .5, and so forth. On top of that, taxes keep getting jacked forcing honest to goodness people out of their homes and displacing them to the east side which is becoming a slum village.

Sometimes it's horribly sad to see progress.
