Re: Heres something a little weird

I look at it as every species on the planet does it, so why the big concern. Now if they could figure out how to make us hibernate like bears so I could sleep through winters, now that would be something I would like to hear.

Seriously though, I think that its one of those things that there isn't a scientific explanation for. I figure its kinda like human version of "idle mode". Just shuts down a few functions for a few hours and voila, its good as new

True. Every species does do it, though there are many that can't even sleep at long intervals because their lives are constantly in threat.

It's just a very awkward thing that we are built to rest despite the dangers presented by rest. Of course, as you pointed out, we have to. I guess that's just the trade off.
"It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

"You'll not find more penny-wise/pound-foolish behavior than in Major League Baseball." - Rob Neyer

Well yeah, something has to be able to eat us, and keep it in order, population control... too bad we are too safe now eh?

Or they sleep like Dolphins - shut off half their brain at a time and rest that half while the other half functions normally and keeps them 'safe' and allows them to pay attention to everything still.

wha...really? So dolphins sleep, but half their brain is "awake" and senses things around them? That is incredible. Dolphins are some odd creatures man.

You would think it would be easy to put a reason behind it.
