It's not ok, but what can you do? I don't think anyone here is saying that you're wrong. But it doesn't really help.

Anyway, I wish I could think of something that helps your g/f, but I just can't think of anything. Sorry.

This is America thin has been in for awhile. So if you are skinny HollyWood says you are in. If you are fat you are not in. Look at teenage girls that think it is cool to be real skinny. I guess it really comes down to this. When you tell some one they are eating too much you are controlling their eating. Sure it is the same when you are skinning, but in reality telling some one to eat more is a little different than telling someone to eat less. But being skinny is not easy too. But I think most skinny people would take being skinny instead of being heavy.

        Re: Double standards?

According to what society says people should look like, being skinny is the way to go. Calling someone skinny is not offensive because they think they should look this way. Calling someone fat is offensive because they think that it's unacceptable. Most of them have self-esteem/self-perception issues as it is. They don't care to be reminded that the way they look is not suitable to everybody else.

Crabs in a barrel, crabs in a barrel.

Since the majority of the US is overweight, some think that everybody should be bigger (not thin). They want everyone to conform to make them feel better.

I'd be willing to bet that those that actually make comments, are secretly envious. It's much easier to make 'skinny' comments than to lose weight.

I think if that were my girlfriend I would ask why the hell they would give her that. Then look at her and say do they want to to get even bigger?

Once she stops crying I'd say just kidding but, now it doesn't seem like that big of a problem now does it?

I don't get it either, but here's a possible reason...Maybe deep down they really are jealous of her being so skinny that they want her to be heavier so they don't feel as bad?

Now that's a more negative reason, I think more of them are just they want her to be healthy and think she's not. Still a total double standard though, we can't lecture fat people because they're unhealthy. Yeah, anorexia and bulimia are diseases but being morbidly obese is a health issue too.

I'm skinny (a hair under 6'2 and 180ish, used to be skinner when I was in HS and college) and I've caught a little crap for years...you just ignore it, but it is annoying when people tell you to eat more. Now I'm at a more normal weight so it doesn't happen often, but it's weird why this is ok.

I could get fired for telling someone who's fat to stop eating so much, but it'd be fine if I went to a skinny co-worker and tried to give him/her food. I guess it's ok because skinny people are usually less offended than fat people, but doesn't make it right.

do NOT buy that one. They are simply jealous and envious. Your girl should be proud of a 5'9" 120 lbs frame.

But yeah... it's not something us skinny people should lose sleep over. We're the lucky ones, and they know it too.

It's not an attempt to throw anything in anyone's face. Honestly the problem is viewing thin people as "lucky" like they get up out of bed and eat whatever they want.

Yea, there are some people like that. Yea, there are some large people who will struggle to lose weight due to health problems.

However the majority of the population has control over their body composition. People who are in shape generally choose to live a lifestyle which results in exactly that. The inverse is generally true.

Would a smoker tell a non-smoker to start? But it's ok to tell somebody they don't need to be smoking, right?

I'm skinny and can pretty much eat whatever I want. But it doesn't mean that I do. It doesn't mean that my cholesterol can't increase even if I'm skinny. I still try to eat healthy food. The last time I had McDonald's was....ummm hard to remember...probably several years ago.

As for smokers and non-smokers, you're right. But then again, it feels bad physically (for me) being around a smoker. Yet, a non-smoker doesn't make a smoker feel bad physically.
