    Computer help

    - Updated - See one of my lower posts

With so many people from various backgrounds on this site I thought I'd take a shot and hope one of you guys is a tech guru.

    Well here is my issue

I have a cyberpower computer that is just a year old. For several months though, maybe even as long as I've had it, there have been periodic "beeping" noises coming from inside the computer. There don't seem to be regular intervals because there are usually large gaps in between each beep, about 15 minutes between 2 of the most recent ones and then a 3rd a minute later.

    My specs are as follows

    Windows 7 home premium 64
    mobo: Gigabyte P55M-UD2
    cpu: Intel i5
    Ram: 4gb
    gpu - ATI 4850 HD

ATI catalyst drivers have my graphics card running at about 45 degree cel

Speed fan has the cpu cores temperatures fluctuating between ~25-30 for each core

Any ideas on what is the problem/how to fix it would be greatly appreciated thanks.

Could be fan control. Sometimes the automatic fan controller will drop the RPM of the fans below a certain threshold which could create a beep. You could try disabling smart fan control in the BIOS. Or you could just turn off beeps in device manager if it's not causing any issues other than being annoying.

Yeah as far as I can tell there haven't been any performance/stability issues. Just a slightly concerning beeping.

      Thanks for the help

Well the beeps never really went away, but as I mentioned there never seemed to be any performance issues.

Something else has popped up though. Last night I was surfing the web and talking on aim when suddenly my screen blinked a few times and when everything became clear again the Windows 7 theme had gone from one of the Aero (glass) themes to the basic ones. Fearing something with my video card I went into the ATI catalyst driver program to check out the temperature and it was around 60c. I changed to my low power profile and a few seconds later the temperature was back in the low 40s and the Aero theme came back without me doing anything.

Then today I was surfing the web again (on amazon) and the screen blinked once or twice and then went completely blank. It didn't come back, and so I tried restarting my computer. Upon the restart everything appeared normal. All of the boot and loading screens showed up immediately and Windows booted up entirely. About 2 or 3 seconds after windows finished booting though it went blank again. I turned off the computer, opened the case and took a can of compressed air to blow all the dust out (it had been several months since the last time I did this). I booted up again and here I am. Everything is working and the GPU temperature is in the low 40s (I don't know what it was prior to).

I watch a lot of videos on youtube and shows on things like hulu, and I had been doing a little of each prior to both cases. However, when each problem actually occurred the only windows I had open were Amazon and things like this website.

Could this have just been a case of there being too much dust inside the machine that caused stability issues or should I be concerned about bigger problems?

Could be dust and the dust is causing overheating. If your computer is overheating alot of strange things can happen. Also, sometimes if a hard drive is about to fail it will make some clicking noises. Not saying this is the case for yours but you might want to backup your data just in case.

I believe this was the problem. Your gpu should not be at 60c from surfing the web (not much more than idling). If your gpu is now at 40c when surfing the web, then this sounds/looks much better than before. It looks like dust was impeding your gpu cooler. I've never had that happen to where it has that drastic of an effect, but it's definitely possible.

Most likely the cause. Check to make sure all cards and connections are tight. If it happens again it might be a bios problem that you might consider resetting to default. Could also be as simple as a virus so run a good program to make sure your system is clean.

Yeah, sounds like it was overheating.

Just a quick question though. How do you check the drive temperature? I have Windows XP.
