Re: Store bought spaghetti sauce vs homemade

This is a perfect example of taste buds being different.

I always wondered exactly how different things tasted to someone else. When I bite into a piece of chocolate, it may taste completely different to me then it does someone else.

I won't turn down something home made.. I'm from the south and everything is better if you grow it yourself, but Ragu is the ****.

Re: Store bought spaghetti sauce vs homemade

I've been dreaming of the day when I master a spaghetti sauce. One of these days I'm going to give it a go. I've got a nice little alfrado sauce down but red spaghetti sauce is a slightly different level. For the time being my girlfriend usually has a few jars of store bought and sometimes adds her own little touch.

Store bought is edible and quick but not on the same level as a good homemade sauce.

I've wondered about that too but I'm sure things taste more or less the same to most healthy people. It's probably just the different emphasis of certain qualities in the food that differ.

For example chocolate isn't going to taste like chocolate to you and like chicken or carrots to me. But I might be more or less sensitive to how sweet or bitter a piece of chocolate might be.

Still though, it'd be mind blowing to see, hear and taste through the senses of someone else for just a day.

All the stupid onions, meat, peppers, or whatever unnecessary crap they put in there. It ruins the whole thing when you're eating it and then randomly bite into those.

Good homemade sauce is better than store bought like filet mignon is better than a hot dog.

It may be better, but I eat pasta because it's cheap and easy. I'd prefer to heat up sauce in a minute and a half instead of cooking for hours.

i used to make my own sauce withcrushed tomato, tomato paste and tomato puree, green peppers, onion, mushrooms and carrots and use ground beef and hot itailian sausage. But my didn't like it that way her family always used jar and mix in the veggies. I prefer my way it was the way i learned how to cook. but i now take a jar add some tomato paste and season usually does the trick with some ground beef or turkey in it.

Anybody else got family members or friends like that ????

To me sauce is sauce and taste the same.
Your Wife is absolutely 100% correct. If you can't taste the difference between homemade and store bought you must have terrible taste buds. For me it's like night and day. My parents were both Italian so I know a great sauce when I taste one.

Re: Store bought spaghetti sauce vs homemade

My family's never made homemade sauce so we always use store bought. In college I was dating an Italian girl and for a birthday dinner, she made me spaghetti w/ sauce from scratch and some pizza from scratch. I will say that if made the right way, there is a clear difference between the two, and made from scratch easily takes the cake.

I've had other girlfriends cook for me that way, but none of their sauces compare to hers, none of the other girlfriends have been Italian either though. Even though they're not as good as hers, it's still typically better than even the best store bought ones.

If you buy the right "store brands" and did a blind taste test ... 99% would be hard pressed to know the difference.

I am not talking your Prego's and Ragu's, not even Barilla which is more decent of those three, but the limited ingredient (no preservatives, just olive oil, spices, tomatoes, cane sugar, etc)... higher end ones are pretty hard to discern. And I grew up on home made sauce in an Italian family, and have been cooking myself for 20 years.

There are some pretty damn good ones out there. They just cost a whole lot more.

Bertolli is not bad, it is decent for the not too expensive crowd. That and Barilla.

http://www.palmierifoods.com/ is a fantastic one that taste practically home made, but may not be all over the US.

http://www.raos.com/premium-sauces.aspx probably the best of the group, absolutely as home made as it gets, but it also is pricey $8-9 a jar, but if you factor that you probably do not eat a whole jar yourself, to splurge on it once in a while is well worth it.

The problem you run into with most jarred sauces, and what makes them different than home made is that they mild the hell out of the acid tones of the tomatoes, that you are so used to in home made sauces.

But you can easily combine sauces to make something great. Like a Hunts canned for a more sharper taste, or a Del Monte canned for a more mild taste, or a can of tomato paste with whatever jars you purchase.

Not to mention, if your mothers and wives are NOT taking tomatoes from scratch, crushing them and cooking them in olive oil, and breaking them down into the pulpy paste, then adding fresh boned chicken broth and cooking it down all day, the sauce is NOT "home made". Cans of crushed tomatoes, paste, sauce base, red pack, etc is just a long version of jarred (though they do taste good too).

Same, I always thought most people made spaghetti because it's cheap and quick to make.

I might have to try some of these recipes though.

nice, another Victoria's fan. Their Fra Diavola sauce is very good for a jarred sauce. I recommend it to anyone. To me, its the closest sauce to homeade. Nothing beats a good homeade sauce but this is my go to jar when in need.
