    This is probably an obvious "No", but can you just go in and cash the check and then either deposit the cash or use the cash to pay for the items?

    Usually you can go to the bank listed on the check and cash it at the other party's bank, but being that it's from the Gov't, that probably wouldn't work.

    I guess I really don't have any good ideas.

    Worse case scenario, use a credit card (non debit card) for all of your black Friday purchases and then once your check clears, pay off the card.

      No to the automatic debits coming out, no to the history of overdrafts, a Government issued check, money in the account to cover the rest of it, but it's still not "available". I'm talking to several other banks today. I called yesterday and went as high up as I could, and they assured me that it would all be available today. Now, not that it matters because my direct deposit paycheck went in today as well, so the money itself is not the issue. It's the premise that they're holding onto money that

      A) I have the deposit receipt that said the funds would be available yesterday
      B) I talked to the manager above the 'floor manager' who assured me that since it was a government check, the funds would be available after it "posted" to the account at midnight last night

      This is ridiculous in my opinion. I don't know what bank is going to do a better job though.

      My big thing is, I have a $9600 check coming from the same Government Account on Friday, that I want to keep $2000, and deposit the rest of the $7600. I'm afraid the way that they are acting over a measly $850 check, that they'll try to hold the larger check for a week or longer. This is terrible customer service. From a guy who has several direct deposit paychecks monthly (like clockwork, amounts, etc), and no history of negative things on my account, you'd think that they would try a little harder.

        This is one of my thoughts right now, is the credit card option and just pay it off. I guess I'm more looking for Banking suggestions, that I'd be treated more like a customer than a number.

        The other party's bank is around 35 miles away, but I may end up going forth and cashing it there, and then depositing anyway. I don't know. It's just frustrating.

          Yeah something isnt right. What I would recommmend, is using a small, local bank. By that I mean one of those banks that only has 2-3 branches period. When you are dealing with bigger national or regional banks, they have so many customers they dont care if they piss you off. Small banks dont have the customer base to piss off. They keys is finding a small bank and making sure its FDIC covered. Past that and your good to go.

          I work at a very small local bank. I know that the flexiblitiy given to tellers is far greater than any of the other banks I have been to. You suffer with the convience of certain things (Atm's not everywhere) but they take care of the way you want in the long run. I cant tell you the number of things where we help customers when we know other banks would have said no. After working for a small bank, I dont think Ill ever have an account at a big bank. Others would tell you the exact opposite so its up to you to decide.

            If you have money in your account to cover the check, you should be able to cash the check. At least that is how it always worked for me. Now, I just get my check direct deposited into my account so my funds are available at 12:01 am every payday.

              Yeah that just doesn't sound right at all. If you got the funds to cover it, it should be in your account no more then 2 hours later. That is how it alway worked for me. So I don't know if it is a law in your county or state that makes them hold it or what.

              Seems odd.

                Why not just get someone at Chase to give you an explanation?

                They have to have someone able to tell you why only a portion of it cleared.

                I've never had issues with Chase and this sort of thing. It could be your checks are coming from multiple sources that need to be verified.

                  This is weird WTF...I bank with BB&T and if I deposit anything (meaning any amount of $$$) before 2pm then I can use the money the same day. I've never had an issue with deposits before...

                    Pared, they have ALL been from the KY Department of Treasury, from the same bank, from a GOVERNMENT account. That's why it's so odd. My direct deposits are fine, but where I'm no longer employed by the State, they can't direct deposit, so they had to send paper checks for my final checks. One would think that a Government check, which could be verified very easily, the bank is only 30 miles away, would not have such a hold placed on it.

                    I have never had any trouble at any other banks, at least not of this magnitude. It's not like I was trying to deposit massive private checks. They were all Government issued payroll checks. When you call and ask for a reason, they tell you that it's protocol and that they are "allowed" to hold it for 11 business days technically. I politely told them that they have lost a customer and anyone I know will be informed of these shady practices, to which they seemed to not care.

                    Ah well. And Speedy, that's what I'm saying man, I've never had these issues. I just didn't know if it was "common" with Chase. This is crap.

                      I have seen two different branches do two completely different things even though the both are following the same "policy." It could be like a regional manager that makes them place these holds, where as in a different area they may not be so strict. So while I encourage you to change banks, it could be the employees making this so difficult/confusing/shady and not really the bank its self.

                      One small example from my bank, the tellers need to get customers to sign off on a sheet when they get change. Say a business brings in $400 and wants in broken down into smaller bills and whatnot, he needs to sign for it. In a way it ensures he cant come back and say he was shorted, at the same time its a pain in the ***(since you already verified when you counted back to him ). The point to all of this...... only one branch does it the other completely ignores it. There are only 2 branches to the whole bank and you cant get both of them to do the same thing.

                        Dump Chase and find a new bank. Chase has always been horrible when it comes to customer service. Find a bank that appreciates you as a customer and like you said doesnt' treat you like just a number.
