New planet discovered... and it's not in our solar system!

A hot, gaseous and fast-spinning planet has been found orbiting a dying star on the edge of the Milky Way, in the first such discovery of a planet from outside our galaxy, scientists said Thursday. Slightly larger than the size of Jupiter, the largest in our solar system, the newly discovered exoplanet is orbiting a star 2,000 light years from Earth that has found its way into the Milky Way.

the planet, coined HIP 13044 b
Why don't any planets/planetoids we find get cool names? "HIP 13044 b" simply does not roll off the tongue well.

Meanwhile, Pluto hangs in the balance..flipping the universe off.

I read a few months back that a planet that's exactly like Earth in a lot of ways was discovered. It's the size of a gas giant IIRC but it's in the "green zone" for life.

it's called the habitable zone. But yeah they did, and I think it's somewhere in the orion constellation. Supposedly it's expected to have microbial life on it which is pretty exciting

Quite possibly it could have more than that. And could have life like we are.

There is no coincidence that it is in the Orion Constellation, and the ancient civilizations on our planet have alignments of their architecture to mirror that of Orion's Belt. Did they know something that we are being too close minded to know?

Re: New planet discovered... and it's not in our solar system!

Astronomers were mystified as to how the planet might have formed, since the star contained few elements heavier than hydrogen and helium and planets typically form out of a complex cloud of spinning space rubble.

"It is a puzzle for the widely accepted model of planet formation to explain how such a star, which contains hardly any heavy elements at all, could have formed a planet," said Setiawan.

The above is why I will always stand by my belief that just because we are carbon-based creatures does not mean other creatures have to be. If planets can break the mold, then other things can too.

And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

Exactly right on. Sometimes the laws a physics themselves are flawed, especially when new things are discovered all the time that defy them very "laws".

This is why science evolves over time. At one point, we knew the world was flat. At one point, we knew the world was in the middle of the universe. At one point, we knew how things were created.

This is not a problem with science. Nay, this is the beauty of science: Always be open to new ideas and new thoughts, and something amazing can come out of it. This new planet can change astronomic theory.

                            This is a good thing.

                              Agreed,

However some people in the scientific community don't expand their minds enough. We need more Hawkings and Kakus.
