    GeForce 8800gt
    2 gb ram
3 ghz intel core 2 duo
NZXT Alpha Black Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case with Open Window

Got it in June 08. Hopefully get some extra cash this Christmas to get 2 more GB of ram and make the upgrade to windows 7.

It can run the Bioshocks on highest settings. Could probably run most new games with only 2x AA and maybe less distance detail.

Amazing rig you have built btw.

What do you think about the 8800 GT in general? Can it handle Crisis as I have been reading that is the game to compare with how well a gaming system is setup?

My gaming rig that you see at the top is still in the making. Far from being complete but that is the goal as extra money filters in. No doubt it is going to take me the winter to get it close to finished. Still reading up on some of the components so it is not set in stone. This is why I am looking to my fellow OSer's for some guidance.

10k rpm drive? Why not raid 0 two ssds and then get a 2nd large drive for data storage? Why the 12GBs of ram?

Building in pieces would drive me up the wall. Too impatient when it comes to builds. My old rig died in Feb (built in 09/07). I was hoping to make it to the end of the year and do an actual rebuild, but due to budget constraints in Feb, I had to start with just the mobo/cpu/ram. I also picked up a new PS while I was testing the old rig to see if that was the cause and also had to purchase a sata cd/dvd burner (no ide on mobo). Video card and a 1tb drive were picked up in the summer and then two 10krpm drives picked up in the fall.

        Current build;
        EVGA X58
        i7 2.6hz
        6GB Ram (1600)
        GTX470 (main)
        GTS8800 (physx)
        850w modular Corsair ps
        4 10k rpm drives in raid 0 (3 74gbs, 1 150gb) (OS/Games)
1 TB 7200 rpm drive (storage)
        Coolermaster Stacker 830

The raid 0 setup came about out of boredom. Initially it was going to be the two 74gb 10k rpm drives in raid 0, with the 150gb 10k as temp storage and the 1tb as perm storage but was getting an odd delay on occasion with the 150gb. I had another 74gbs 10k sitting around collecting dust, so I hooked all 4 10k drives up in raid 0 to see how it would perform. Writing is fast, reading is about par with 1 10k rpm (no surprise there). This was actually my first raid setup of any kind for my home system. I wish I could spring for an actual controller card and have a real raid setup though.

I have to say that I haven't been terribly happy with my current mobo. I'm going to ride it out, but this will be the last EVGA board I get, and possible last video card from them (the 470 died within 45 days and two weeks to replace). The layout isn't great. No IDE connector. I know its legacy at this point, but one ide controller wont hurt. The pci-e 1x is in horrible spot too. I've had constant issues with the SATA ports dropping a drive, which has magically been resolved since raiding them all. I still haven't been able to figure that out.

Next steps for me is moving to SSDs in a raid 0 setup. Whenever money permits.

Keep talking as I was not even thinking about a raid 0 setup. Going to have to do some reading concerning this. Look into the warranty of the EVGA board as mine comes with a lifetime replacement by them directly.

Do you think 12 gb of ram is overkill? Just making sure that I could run games like Crisis 2 smoothly.

I'd say it is, at least for an FPS. Crisis, for example, is very GPU demanding, but doesn't require much ram or CPU, so really as of now 4 gigs of ram will run basically anything. It's not going to hurt having that much ram, but It all depends on your budget.

A 8800gt will run crysis on high settings, but really can't handle any AA while doing so. The 8800gt is a good low budget card, but is pretty outdated. If you can afford a better card, go with that.

Ok, sounds like I should trim back the ram and if I need more I can always add later.

I'm heavy on the GTX 580 but I would like to see a decent price drop before picking it up.

12GB is overkill if you're just building a gaming machine. If you're doing something else, like running multiple VMs or something along those lines, it makes sense. Plus, you can always upgrade later if RAM becomes an issue.

Yea I am only building a gaming rig that can also be used for the basics like MS Office, internet browsing, ect.

If everyone on this site posted their rig, I am pretty sure the one you have laid out would be one of the most powerful. Mine cost about $750 and it runs games just fine with 2 year old technology. You have a $500 video card, you are going to be able to run Crysis with the very best setting on the highest resolution you possibly can.

You won't even need to overclock it.

and make sure you have the proper version of whatever OS you use so that all 12 of those GB of RAM can even be used.

Yea I am building it for longevity. Going with Windows 7 for the OS.

Just wondering if anyone has a blu-ray/ dvd in their computer and what would they recommend? Not sure what to go with here.

This is my first gaming rig so what does everyone use for controllers to play their games?

I built it a year ago for about $1500

Only games I have are Empire Total War and Napoleon TW and I can run those on max with no lag. Sometimes there are over 10,000 troops on the field with the mod installed.

I have rarely used the Bluray, but for $95 it was worth it, I guess.

Nice setup! Do you think the Corsair 850 power supply is good? Not sure if I really need the 1200 w since I do not have plans to stack multiple graphic cards. Which blu-ray player did you go with LG and does it also read DVD's?

Video card and a 1tb drive were picked up in the summer and then two 10krpm drives picked up in the fall.

                              Current build;
                              EVGA X58

Did some reading and I am sold on adding OCZ Vertex 2 for SSD. Not sure how big I should get.

Definitely going to scrap the Velociraptor and go with a 1 TB Western Digital Black for permanent storage. Once again, wondering if the Corsair 850 w power supply is all I should need for my setup which I have updated on the first post???
