    Laptop or PS3?

Those are my options for Christmas this year from my parents...

Don't really need either one, as I have a nice desktop PC, but a laptop would be cool. That way the wife could have the PC and I'd get my own computer.

Don't really need a PS3, as I already have a 360, but I've been dying to play The Show. Can anyone give me some other positives with owning a PS3? I think it's cool that it plays DVD's, but I'm not in to BluRay so that doesn't really matter to me.

    Options, options...

Assuming you have a hi def TV, BELIEVE me, once you play a bluray on that thing, you'll be into them.

Yeah... I've watched movies on bluray and it's cool, but it's not something I'd be willing to switch over to. My DVD collection is way too big to switch over. Regular DVD quality is just fine by me, but I see what you're saying - bluray is pretty sick.

I am just intrigued that you are married and your parents still buy you christmas gifts, not alone christmas gifts, but a gift that cost that damn much.......

My parents told me when I turned 16, you a grown *** man now, you want a gift you better get a damn job and buy it yourself. Needless to say my parents haven't bought me a christmas gift in 16 years. And majority of my friends stopped getting them after they turned 21.

So I say make the most of it and get a PS3.

LOL. Believe me man, I know. Not only a wife, but a kid and a mortgage as well. They used to spend like $600-800 each on all of us (I have three older siblings) but they've tamed it down to about $300-400. I tried telling them that I didn't need anything, but they are pretty pushy about it. My wife gets the same treatment as I. "Pick some nice gifts, or we'll be pissed."

          What can you do?

Enjoy it while it lasts, I'd say go with the PS3.
I've heard this "patience is a virtue" junk all my life. I'm happy to say I have no virtue, no scruples, and no desire to wait too long for anything. In my humble opinion instant gratification takes too long!

Well, yah I could have worded that better, sorry. I wouldn't by any means toss out the DVDs, as the PS3 will play those too, and even upscale them. However, in the FUTURE, when you buy MORE movies, I'd definitely start buying the blurays since you would have that option.

As for which to get, I'd say PS3, just because there are a ton of exclusives out now that you could catch up on, you'd get the best version of Netflix streaming available, AND, as we mentioned, you'd get a bluray player.

Yeah... I like to buy DVD's on the cheap though. Is there any bluray bins that sell four DVD's for $20? I guess when the price for bluray's drop, I'll make the switch.

                  Touche.

Although if you check places like Amazon, you can definitely find some really good deals. I just bought Life on bluray for about $35, and it's $60 in store.

                    Re: Laptop or PS3?

                    Here's my main question...

What are some of the qualities to owning a PS3?

For me, as I said before, I'm dying to play MLB The Show. It's been so long since I've played a good baseball game. I'm all done with 2K. That game has just let me down so much in the past...

                    I like the fact that a PS3 plays DVD's, even though I don't need a DVD player.

How about online capabilities? I run an ethernet cable directly to my 360, it would be cool if I didn't have to run a cable to a PS3...

Online features are free with a PS3, right?

I guess I'm just looking for reasons to pick a PS3...

Along with The Show, there are tons, and I mean TONS of fantastic first party titles for the system. Yes, online is free, and as long as you have a good route, wireless works wonderfully. And, just to reaffirm, The Show rocks, and it sounds like you enjoy baseball games, so that's an obvious plus for you.

Free online is why I'll be getting a ps3 soon, well that, gt5 and multiple exclusive titles. I don't care at all about blue ray though.

I can't believe you're married, with kids, and a mortgage and your parents are still buying you gifts. I'm 21 and my parents stopped buying me gifts 3 years ago. Whatever you did as a child..

I would go with the laptop. It sounds more beneficial. You already have a 360. The only thing you'd get out of a PS3, from what it sounds like, is free online play and The Show. I don't know if that's really worth it. How big of a deal is you and your wife having your own computers? Are you guys constantly fighting over the one you currently have? If not, then maybe the PS3 is the right choice.

Nah, we don't fight over computer time at all. It would just be kind of cool to have all of my own music and whatnot. From what I've heard about The Show, it's just a matter of time before I break down and get a PS3 anyway. I am just thinking that a laptop would be cool as well.

I explained the part about my parents earlier... They are in their 60s and have a lot of cash to burn (very successful family business). I tried getting them off the hook for Christmas presents, but they'd have none of it. I guess when someone tells you that it's their pleasure to drop three or four hundred bills on you, how are you going to argue with that? I think them buying gifts gives them a lot of satisfaction, so whom am I to rob them of them that satisfaction?

I have two days to make up my mind, really... I think I am leaning toward a laptop just because I see it as being more practical, and I do really feel like the PS3 would be a purchase for one game (The Show). We'll see. It's been so damn long since I've played a baseball game that I love... I drool at the thought.

Yeah. Having your own computer is nice, especially a laptop. That's the choice I would make. And hey, depending on the laptop, I'd assume it's more expensive than a PS3. It's not like you couldn't buy a PS3 sometime down the road and have both!

As far as your parents, hey, just keep rollin with it. I'm sure it does give them some satisfaction.
