Re: Someone used my Debit Card

I had someone use my debit card to order plane tickets from Africa. Total was just over $2500. They tested it a few times buying just a few dollars worth of stuff before going after the big expense.

My belief is that it came from an online supplement company that I used called supplementwarehouse

I've spoken with others at a local gym who experienced the same problem and this is the only company that we had in common.

Re: Someone used my Debit Card

They rang it up as credit and punched in the #s.

Hmmm I don't know about Best Buy cash registers, but when I worked at Walmart you couldn't just punch in a credit card number without an assistant manager's key and over ride code. The register wouldn't accept it without an over ride.

But anyway.......this is all too common to have debit card or credit card numbers stolen. Got to be careful when it comes to using outdoor ATM machines, ATM machines on college campuses, gas stations, etc.

It is very easy and cheap to make your own credit card number copying device. Any junior techie or hacker can easily go up to any atm, gas station pump, etc and get the last 30 or 100 card numbers used on it, store the information and walk away in 30 seconds.

I will be curious to hear how this story ends up and if you are able to pinpoint exactly what happened.

Re: Someone used my Debit Card

This is exactly why I tell everyone to not use debit cards. Just get a credit card and pay the bill off every month.

With a debit card, your money is gone from your account until you get it back, with a credit card, you simply have to dispute the charge and noone touches your money.

Debit cards are getting better at protecting the consumer, but they are still a very bad alternative to credit cards if you have the discipline to pay the credit cards off each month.

My theft occurred a few years ago and my bank took care of it over the phone in a matter of minutes. As a matter of fact, they were the ones who called as the activity look suspicious that day. My debit card is tied in with Visa so I didn't have to do anything and the money was back in the account before even hanging up.

You have the best advice and this is what I do now.

This is the main reason why I use my credit card instead of my debit card. You have more leverage when things like this happen and you do not have to worry about it screwing up other checks in the pipeline that could get affected.

Wow I feel like a total idiot. I had to renew my anti virus subscription on the 25th which I did(I got it and my laptop from Bestbuy), so I renewed it through the antivirus site not thinking or connecting that to bestbuy yesterday when I looked. The 42 dollars is for my antivirus, and it showed up as bestbuy and not the antivirus site. wow is all I can say. Didnt file a claim on it yet so Im good with that, only thing I'm screwed over with is having to wait 10 days for a new card.

I don't make enough money by myself to have a credit card. At the end of the month having to pay it off in 1 lump sum would leave me a broke as hell for a week.

That's what you get for unnecessarily paying for <s>bloatware</s> antivirus.

Better than the alternative. But, as snepp said, there is more than adequate free options out there that will match or exceed whatever program you are using for anti-virus/adware/spyware/etc.

That statement makes no sense. If you only charge what you can afford how would it be any different than spending as you go along? On top of that, you could be getting 1 to 3% cash back or some other reward and have you money gain a little bit of interest as it sits in an interest bearing checking account for a month before you pay off your credit card bill.

I don't think putting all your money on a credit card is wise. It's better to get a debit card that gives you rewards. Like my debit card gives me cash back.

It's more difficult to maintain a healthy credit card balance. If I automatically pay it off every month, there will be months when it takes ALL of my money to pay off the balance.

Because I log into my checking account online everyday, I never spend too much. It's easier to spend money with a credit card than it is a debit card.
