    Re: Off Topic 2011

I just feel there should never be a question of "am I supposed to tip this person? And if so, how much?"

It should be more like "You know what? this person/these people really did a great job, I want to give them a little extra"

Im not a fan of tipping delivery guys especially if its not free delivery. But I do anyway.

I also tip my barber. I dont really know why but yeah it would be awkward if I didnt.

I tip both as well. I never got why people wouldn't tip the delivery guy at least a buck or two. You didn't have to get off your *** and get your food, he/she brought it to your door.

edit: additional spout of anger: If a server performs poorly, and is given a poor tip in reflection, does that server then decide he/she needs to do a better job next time or does he/she decide to do worse?

            I tip man damn! lol
But my roomate quit tipping when our favorite wings spot started charging for delivery. Im not so stingy but I can totally get why he wouldnt want to tip. I still do.

Once I tipped a delivery lady 3 dollars in quarters...she wasnt excited about it.
Another time a delivery guy was excited because I shoveled a path to our door just for them during a snow storm.

When I was in the dorms I never had cash so I never tipped. I paid through the phone with my card. I don't think they cared though because they ONLY delivered to the dorms so I don't think they got many tips.

It's your JOB that should rely on your service, not your tips. I actually tip pretty well because I'm terrified of poor service, or unspeakable things done to my food.
But the servers aren't the one's that have set this precedent.

I agree with you but I'm not going to punish servers for a decision that it above them.

If they were given the choice to work straight for an average hourly wage or to work straight for tips and chose the former it would be one thing. But why would you punish a server for a decision that he/she wasn't even afforded the option of?

I still tip, I just wish the system was different. But I think a lot of jobs aren't necessarily paid appropriately. Cops and teachers should make way more than they do. If a restaurant server makes more than a doctor in a year because they earn so many tips, that just doesn't seem right to me. I know I'm coming off harsh to servers but I'm not really trying to, I know they bust their asses all day, but the service provided in comparison to what other professions offer doesn't equal out. I don't even wanna get started on how overpaid athletes and actors are for simply providing entertainment.

You're not coming off harsh, I agree with you 100%.

Basically, the consumers AND the servers are getting the raw end of the deal.

As customers, we are paying market value for the meal and then being asked to contribute on top of that for the service but at the same time, the income of the servers is strictly reliant on their clients that evening (or day) and how everything goes. It really isn't fair to either, I'm just not willing to punish the servers since they don't have a say in the matter.

I hate tipping because, admittedly, I'm cheap, but I feel bad if I don't. That's where most of their money comes from, plus they're paying for their own gas most of the time.

I usually tip 20% as a standard. If the service is what I deem to be poor or not up to standards. (Not checking on us, forgetting to place an order correctly (my GF has food allergies), drinks being empty for way to long.) Then I will tip a little less usually never lower that 15%.

If food and what not is wrong I can't blame the server so I just send it back and make sure it's correct.

I usually give delivery drivers $5 or $6. Sometimes less though. If we are waiting more that 40 minutes for example.
