I've got a question.

When people say "southern", where is the delineation between northern and southern? I've heard the Mason/Dixon line, but I've never heard anyone call DC or Maryland southern states. Virginia, from what I can tell, is sometimes part of it. Can anyone enlighten the situation?

From what I've heard from people It depends on where you live. Most people that have grown up in North Carolina say that any state north of them is a "yankee state", then people from South Carolina say the same of their state.

Being from the North, I've always just associated anything south of DC as being "The South"

I'd say Maryland, Virginia, and Kentucky are Mid-South while everyone further south is deep-South.

The North Carolina/Tennesse upper line is the divider now. IMO

I dunno, just the regions south of the Mid-Atlantic but still to far North to be considered deep south.

Mid-Atlantic is generally considered to be New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania though some may include Delaware and Maryland as well. The Wikipedia definition for the region actually includes VA and WV as well as DC.
