 A few examples

 Spoiler

SpoilerBE FOREWARNED! Many toasters are not designed to be operated on their side. 80% of the heat from a toaster escapes out the top (hot air rises). Putting a toaster on its side will trap a lot of very hot air on the upper side of the toaster. This can warp or discolor a plastic toaster and can cause excessive heating of a metal toaster, potentially staining the surface on which the toaster is resting.
Additionally, your toaster is designed to have crumbs and drips land on a cool plate at the bottom of the toaster. Placing a toaster on its side (particularly with cheese on the toast) can lead to grease and crumbs landing directly on the heating elements and staying there. Unlike a toaster oven (where the heating element is raised a half inch from the bottom to prevent crumb/dripping contact with the element), toasters have heating wires that lie flat on a metal surface. Any crumbs or grease on that surface will be directly in contact with the heating element.
Please observe proper toaster safety, particularly when operating a toaster outside of its normal use. Be sure to pull the toaster away from the kitchen wall (to ensure there are no upper cabinets directly above the toaster which could catch fire) and place the toaster on a metal cookie sheet if you’re going to be taking a short-cut to using a grill/toaster oven/broiler.
