Re: Off Topic 2011
I had a similar opportunity at another hospital a little up the highway to become one of the corporate chef's.
About a 10% raise was involved and basically the same benefits as I have now. However I really like it where I am and pretty much call my own hours as I have quite a bit of tenure here now at the 8 year mark so, I just stuck with the moniker "The grass isn't always greener" and stayed here.
I really don't regret it all.Originally posted by Anthony BourdainThe celebrity chef culture is a remarkable and admittedly annoying phenomenon. Re: Off Topic 2011
Alright, small dilemma today. Job related.
I work at company A. I do my share of complaining about it, but I ultimately enjoy it. The team I work as part of is awesome, and I feel like we're all friends. I've been here for roughly a year and nine months.
An external friend from Company B let me know that I would fit into a job opening they have. Their company is a very large one, but everyone there seems to enjoy it a lot. It would also give me roughly a 14% raise. One problem I can see is that there's a feeling that this company expects more than 40 hours a week from its employees, although my friend didn't have that same feeling.
In my profession, it seems that the only way to get a substantial raise is to jump companies. It's not a given that I'd get the job, and I haven't put in a resume yet. I did interview there when I graduated college, but did not get the job for some reason. My friend told me that it's not a major problem, as he didn't get hired after his first interview either.
So... do I put in the resume? I'm worried that I'll jump ship, and realize that I loved it here. I might be in line for a promotion (which might be anywhere from 7-10% raise as well), although I'm not sure that I will. I'm a bit wary of only being at a place for a year and nine months before I start looking for something else, but my friends tell me that it's not a major problem. I'm a bit nervous about this. That 14% raise looks really good.
Any advice?
At the end of the day, I would ask myself several questions:
1) Is the company I'm currently working for is stable? Any layoffs? Anyone got promoted/got a raise recently? Are they hiring every now and then?
2) Would I be ok with working more than 40 hours a week for more money? Personally, I wouldn't but 14% is a nice raise. Are you planning on buying a house or any other things that you're currently saving for? If so, you definitely want that 14%.
Anyway, remember that none of these jobs is your last job (probably). And maybe you can try to figure out if you can go back to your old job if you don't like the new one.
That wasn't really helpful, wasn't it?Last edited by youvalss; 03-01-2011, 04:09 PM.My Specs:

Re: Off Topic 2011
I am working on saving for a lot of different things (wedding, house, car, etc), so that 14% would help out a great deal. My fiance doesn't know if she wants me moving jobs right now, but I think that's because she's still in college and hasn't gotten to this level yet.
I'm working on my resume right now, trying to figure out what I want to do. I've been teetering back and forth on the fence... I just haven't landed on either side of it yet. The way I see it, though, is that the hard part isn't now... it's if I get the job. That'll be when the decision needs to be made.
I think I just talked myself into applying.Rose City 'Til I Die

I'm not 100% sure that the feeling that it's expected to work more than 40 hours in a week is true. I just know, driving by at odd hours of the night (it's on the way to the grocery store), that it still has people in there, either working, or playing ping pong or what have you.

You should only worry if you actually get offered the job.
At the very least you work on your interviewing skills for future opportunities. It can only help you.Comment
