Re: Off Topic 2011
I know nothing about cricket, but I work with an Indian guy who has been getting up at 4am every morning to watch the matches and such, and hearing about how serious it is in India, and knowing how many people there are...to be surprised that a match that is important to almost a billion people (yes, apparently cricket is that serious in that part of the world) gets the headline on ESPN just seems like American-superiority to me.
And trust me, this is coming from someone who thinks cricket is one of the most confusing/boring sports and cares very little about it. I was also surprised that, the other day the India/Pakistan match got front-page on ESPN.com, but when I brought it up to the kid at work and talked about it, my opinion was completely changed.Comment

I'd just like to thank you all for a very entertaining day at work. I got the bare minimum done.
But the unrivaled highlight of the day was the poem about Born.Comment

India being in the World Cup, and its population alone, make it more important to more people than all of the things you listed, combined.

Also, I see your name is still white. Wasn't that part of the April Fools Day shenanigans or did they just forget to make it blue again?

Re: Off Topic 2011
Yeah, I guess when you look at it that way, it makes sense. And I don't think it's American superiority so much as ignorance in the sense that most Americans don't know anything about Cricket. But then there are plenty of Indians in America. There sure seem to be a lot in the various departments around Pitt with which I have some familiarity at least.
Also, I see your name is still white. Wasn't that part of the April Fools Day shenanigans or did they just forget to make it blue again?
I agree with your initial response - I was surprised that it got the headline, but after talking with my co-worker about it and realizing how serious it was to those countries, it's hard to me to say it doesn't deserve some recognition.
And no, my name being turned white had nothing to do with April Fool's day. The "...for strippers" part of my title was, but my name was changed to white after I asked Steve to remove my supporter status from the site after a few things.Comment

Re: Off Topic 2011
It's not that I hate cricket. It's just that I think I'm pretty smart and can pick up on things, but cricket is a freaking mystery to me. I don't understand the scoring, rules, when the game ends, etc. And I've tried several times. I think I would need to sit down with a very understanding cricket fan who could explain it to me step by step as we watched a match.Comment

And yeah, somehow - despite the "stats" saying Sri Lanka 274/6 (50ov) to Indias 277/4 (48.2ov) India won by 6 "wickets" with 10 balls remaining.
I have no idea what the **** any of that means.Comment

I completely agree. My senior year in college, I lived in an apartment "complex" that had a lot of Indians and any nice day they took over one of the "yards" and played. I did not understand a single second of it.

Edit: Also I couldn't follow it if I tried. For the exact reason you all stated.Last edited by TracerBullet; 04-02-2011, 02:10 PM.Originally posted by BlueNGoldI feel weird for liking a post about exposed penises.Comment

Re: Off Topic 2011
Persoanlly I was just surprised because ESPN usually would put the Final Four here. I know how important it is over there. I think it was Pakistan who had their coach murdered for losing to India a year or two ago. Most of my surprise comes from them actually realizing how important it is lol. I remember the Ruby championship last year only got tot he front page for a little while because they had to replay the entire game. The final only showed up on the side though.Comment
