I don't even get a lunch break. 8-5 Tues-Sat, no break for lunch (or any break in general).

Pretty sure that's against the law. If you work more than 6 hours straight the law requires your employer to give you a 30 minute break. Unless you work for yourself

I work retail. There's a few sketchy things with my job (paid part check/part cash for tax purposes) and for the most part it's alright, it just sucks when it gets super busy and I don't get to eat haha.

That kind of stuff is handled state by the state. In Missouri, employers don't have to provide a break.

Missouri law does not require employers to provide employees a break of any kind, including a lunch hour. These provisions are either left up to the discretion of the employer, can be agreed upon by the employer and employee, or may be addressed by company policy or contract.

Well I've only ever worked retail at Best Buy but we have to take a lunch at 7.5 hours or more. It's company policy.

Interesting, I thought it was federal law. Thanks for the heads up as I will not be applying for a job in Missouri anytime soon

I worked retail at a Sears in my HS days... With BB, Circuit City and Walmart nearby, no one came except for lost mall shoppers...... Entire workday was essentially a break.

Yeah, federal law leaves it up to the state.

The Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) does not require breaks or meal periods be given to workers. Some states may have requirements for breaks or meal periods. If you work in a state which does not require breaks or meal periods, these benefits are a matter of agreement between the employer and the employee (or the employee's representative).

I'm lucky. I work in retail (JCPenney), and whenever we have a shift longer than 6 hours we generally get a 1 hour off the clock dinner/lunch break and a 15 minute break. I worked 12-9 tonight so I got the 1 hour dinner plus two 15 minute breaks. Not like we need them, our mall is dead Out of the 57 lots for stores in the mall, 22 are vacant...and even the one anchor store was vacant for almost 9 years, but it was filled in May. It's a ghost town.

Sounds like one of the malls near me. It's been going downhill for years. They even have large sections of the 2 level parking garage roped off because it's never anywhere near full anymore.
