ESPN shows are not real. They are greatly scripted and controlled. Most of the back and forth is planned out, but a few times you will get some real feelings, but they try to keep it controlled to not turn away viewers on one side or the other.
Do you watch the NFL Network. Most of it is rehearsed, but they do research, they use game tape and they don't use lame man terms either its all football talk. You can get lost listen to sapp sometimes when he talkes about D lineman. Watch Playbooks it comes on Wed and Thurs its coaches breaking down game film and exploring weakness and strengths for marquee games. Wednesday they'll go over how the winners won and how the losers lost and Thursday they'll go over upcoming matchup Its a really good show.

I saw that too and said to myself, "Maybe that's just a funny way of saying that term because in a way they could kind of mean the same thing."

As far as doing research, more than you'll ever realize. I don't think anyone realizes how difficult it is to do games each week where you're having to research not only both teams, but national stories as well. It's a bitch, but it's awesome at the same time.
Probably 50% of the positions at ESPN are titled "researchers". Very few of the people you see on in studio on TV do their own research. My boys have told me some hilarious stories about anchors like Chris McKendry knowing jack ish about sports. The time Colin Cowherd went on a rant about Ginobili being the most overrated European NBA player.

At the same time, guys like Colin Cowherd and Skip Bayless prepare every day, usually putting in 5-6 hours before every show. It's more going over the material that's handed to them than them going out and researching stuff on their own though.

Broadcasters probably have it the most difficult but at the same time they share "scouting reports" with other broadcasters to get a lot of info on teams they haven't seen and they are given boatloads of info from researchers. It's not that bad IMO but they certainly work hard.

That's why i prefer to hear athletes who played the sports talk and not the broadcasters cause they don't understand the passion of the game. They get it but don't understand it.

I feel like watching ESPN, they are told basically what to say. Seems really scripted a lot of times, you feel like they can't be that dumb.

As someone who has done play-by-play/color, you definitely need a good deal of research. The higher you get, the less you have to find yourself. Even low-end college games tend to have game notes or media guides you can find with rosters, pronunciations, obscure stats, historical stats and such. But for like high school football, you're on your own.
