Small Tips and Tricks for Life

I thought this could be a place where people could share little tips or tricks people use for every day things in every day life.

I thought of this yesterday when my boss was complaining how much of a pain in the butt it was to peel an orange and I pointed out that

    1) If you roll an orange around with a bit of pressure for 20 or 30 seconds prior to peeling, it helps to seperate the skin a bit from the meat of the orange and makes the peel come off much easier. You are left with a lot less of the white stuff on the orange.

    2) When you open a brand new CD, instead of trying to peel the stupid sticker off that seals the case shut only to have it rip in shreds while you spend several minutes picking and peeling at it, open it from the back side.

Flip the case around and use your thumb nail (or any finger nail or flat object) to pop the hinge-part of the case that allows the case to swing open and close. Once you do this, the case will open like a book and is only connected by the sticker. You can then can easily remove the sticker by peeling the case away from the sticker on both sides. The pop the hinge-part back together and good as new.

Learn to operate a computer almost exclusively without a mouse. At least when it comes to programs you use a lot.

Look both ways before crossing the street.
Don't wear red at the Bull Run.
Don't poke alligators with a stick less than 10 feet long.
Ummm ....did I mention look both ways before crossing the street.

Seriously, I'll give you fire related ones...common sense maybe but ones I always do.

                1. When staying at a large hotel....I never stay above the 6th floor...and I stay on the front side of the building if possible.
Most Fire Departments only have apparatus whose aerial ladders are 90-100 feet long. While that's technically 10 stories....don't forget that ladder placement will take them quite a distance away from the building....lessening the actual height it will reach.
                2. When going into any public place ....I always immediately check for 2 exits...my location...and that those exits are clear(you wouldn't believe how many places use those areas for storage.
                3. You already know not to use elevators in a building in a fire. But you know the way to them usually and maybe not the stairs. What's at the elevator?...the signs showing where the stairs are. Pretty worthless at the height they are mounted in a smoke condition...but rip 'em off the way....INSTANT MAP! Just make sure to take others with you...you just took their map too.
                4. Department stores. Yeah..they're going by the wayside with the internet..but...remember this...selling floor area(where the clothes and items are)= carpeted area....walkways(leading to an exit)= tile.
Speaking of tiles or large places. Smoke will keep you from seeing where the heck you are and your way out is. Wandering around the middle of a large selling floor in circles or back and forth with no real sense of direction is pretty friggin' hairy. Walls will ALWAYS lead to doors.....right?...to find the wall find a tile line and follow it or in the case of a home depot type place...cement floor...which will have an expansion joint....you can follow that to a wall. Keep the wall on your right or your left at all times...and you will eventually find an exit. Yes...easier said than done...but if you keep yourself in check...you can do it.

                Fire Marshall Bill...checkin' out!

Don't use vegetable oil to fry foods , use canola oil it takes longer to burn, which means you could cook more without dark browning.
