    Yul Brynner: Who remembers him?

I guess this is another one of those "if you're a certain age do you know..." threads. Anyone remember Yul Brynner and the "Just don't smoke" ad? Without googling it, lol, anyone remember what role he was famous for?
I remember when that no smoking ad ran. Was very eerie.

When I was a kid I remember watching Westworld where he was an out of control robot at a wild west theme park.

I'm younger than you guys, but ever since I was introduced to The Magnificent Seven by my father, I always thought of Yul Brynner as one of the few b.a. characters in cinema of his time, like Steve McQueen or Charles Bronson. Kinda like the Expendables of today but higher in quality.

Definitely The Magnificent Seven - one of my dad's and mine favorite movies ever. I remember he also played in the movie The King And I. He was the man!

Must admit Mag. Seven came out before I was born but my pops too watched it and I with him later on in re-runs. At that time there was no cable , at least in the Bronx, so channels 2,4,5,7,9,11 and 13(pbs) was pretty much it. That reminds me of another "remember" thread.

He won the Academy Award AND a Tony for his role in "The King and I"...

A major dude from the "Golden Age" of showbiz, IMHO...

Best part: 4th wife was a Malaysian ballet dancer about 40 years his junior...

                  Great bad *** actor indeed!

Even some of his lesser known films are pretty good. One such film is The File of the Golden Goose which is a good police film that sees Brynner and his partner infiltrate a counterfeiting gang. It was also filmed in London so it's a bit of a different look for a crime film in that way.

I should clarify that. They weren't "re-runs" per se. Back in those days you had "The Late Movie" and "The Late Late Movie" and other such names on different channels. You get to watch highly formatted and severely edited movies that came out YEARS if not DECADES ago. LOL

I don't know if it's the same way in other places, but where I come from - that light that police cars have on the roof - have been referred to as "Kojak". It's been kind of cops' slang back in the 70's-80's (and maybe even today), and many people used to call it this way for years.
