Best method to pay online...
I was wondering how everyone here pays online. I love the accessibility of paying for stuff over the internet. But I'm paranoid over security. I just got my own debit card (I'm 18) and I check my account online everyday. Paypal seems like it would be annoying considering they take like 2.9 percent for every transfer you make. Is using your debit card online to vulnerable? I read that credit cards were the way to go, but I don't plan on ever getting into those. Also, what is the best method to pay normally? Do you guys just use cash or your card the majority of the time? Thanks.Tags: None -

And it's not just online - it functions as a credit card too (it's from VISA), so I can use it for basically any transaction that takes CC's. The money just comes straight out of the account, so there's still no credit involved even when I use it as such. I really don't even carry that much cash around with me at all - just enough for emergencies.
As easy as it is to use though, you gotta make sure you don't go overboard. It is only what's in your account, after all. -

I use my debit card for pretty much everything, and have for many years. Like you said, all I have to do is log onto my bank account online and make sure nothing's going through that shouldn't be - and to this point, over 10 years after I started using it, that has never happened.

Re: Best method to pay online...
I have a 2nd checking account (that I keep a 0 balance in) tied into Paypal that I use for online purchases. When I need to make a purchase I transfer the necessary funds from my primary checking account into the 2nd checking account, takes about 30 seconds.
I also have a Visa debit card for that 2nd account that I can use on any sites that don't support Paypal.Member of The OS Baseball Rocket Scientists AssociationComment

I use both my debit and credit card for online purchases and never have had an issue. 95% of my purchases come from Amazon or Footballfanatics so those are secure sites. Just make sure you monitor your bank account and only use secure sites to pay online. I love shopping online, I can't stand malls.Ohio State - Reds - Bengals - Blackhawks - BullsComment

Re: Best method to pay online...
Working in IT, I always try to tell my employee's a few tricks of the trade.
If you're going to buy online, make sure the website is legit. Don't go to "ebay.net" and think you can buy something that is normaly $500 for $50. There is a reason why it's "too good to be true" because it's not.
Be smart with your purchases.
Never click on links in emails. I know people always sign up for store's e-newsletters, which can contain links of "great sales"
Instead of clicking on those links, manually type the URL in your address bar, so you know you're going to a legit site and it's not transferring you to a dummy site.
Since you're young, and sounds like you're new to Credit Cards (even though you have a debit card). Here's one word of advice for you... Don't purchase anything that you can't fully pay back within a month. Having some odd amount of credit is nice, but not using it wisely is a foolish choice.Comment

Re: Best method to pay online...
Interesting thread. I only have a debit card (VISA so it works for almost everything), but I need to renew it because I can't view the security code on it now (had it for a few years now, it's scratched off). I know the newers ones are made differently. I swipe cards a lot being a cashier at work.
Also, depending on your prefernces, make sure you know your overdraft fee status with your bank. I've taken mine off -- if I don't have the cash, it declines. I'll take the embarassment over being charged an extra 30$ or whatever it is if I do go over. I check my account online relatively frequently, though, so I usually know.
I've never really bought online, but some people are just stupid with who they give their information to. I tend to be overly protective with my stuff over the internet. I'd rather be safe then sorry.NHL - Philadelphia Flyers
