It's tough sometimes. It also depends on the vehicle in question.
A lot of dealerships have an easier time with moving prices/payments on a used vehicle and still making their money. A new vehicle is pretty cut and dry because those dealerships list everything on the window in the buyer's guide and let you know up from the MSRP and such.
If a salesman can sense that you need him more than they need you, then you're going to have a hard time budging on anything.
Just go in with a positive attitude and don't be an *******. Also don't be too eager to make a deal on the same day. I've watched my dad walk out in a dealership because he didn't like what was going on and they called him back wanting to compromise.
It's tough to find an honest sales person these days. My mom's last two vehicles were both from the same Toyota dealership and the same sales person. My dad found someone he liked and went back there when he was looking to get my mom out of her Corolla and into a Camry.
