I dunno how you could call it the Tequila Sunrise of football. That uniform was loud and all up in your face (in a good way to me, I love those unis) whereas those Hawaii uniforms are fairly conservative:
White helmet
solid color jersey
white pants with "NFL stripes" (for lack of a better term. You know the tri-color stripes down the side)
black shoes

They were once before because of ignorant people, then JJ came in and changed it all up, the culture, the uni, the name, everything.
In a new segment here at Lost Lettermen, once a week we will look back on great college football uniforms lost to history. With certain programs switching unis almost every week, we hope they consider these as potential throwbacks to don once more. First up: Hawaii’s Rainbow Warrior uniforms that were ditched over a decade ago.
The “Rainbow” nickname was first used by reporters in 1923 after Hawaii upset Oregon State and a rainbow supposedly appeared over the stadium. While the nickname stuck, the school went through a series of uniforms until 1982 when they hit the jackpot and find the uniforms they’d wear for nearly 20 years.
The jerseys, as you can see from above, were green with white numbers and rainbow colors around the edge of the sleeves. The helmet, pictured below, was white with the “UH” logo set at the end of a rainbow arc on the side of the helmet (Note: the helmet did not have that stripe down the middle). Obviously the rainbow colors set this uniform apart from others but we also like how they work with that light shade of green. With teams always trying to find the fiercest mascots and uniforms, there was something great about Hawaii saying, “We’ve got rainbows on our helmets and we’ll still beat you.”
Not surprisingly, over time the athletes began to hate being called the rainbows. As the symbol of the rainbow became more synonymous with the gay community, there became more of a push by the athletic department to change the uniform and nickname. After changing helmets for 1999, the Rainbow issue finally came to a head in 2000, soon after June Jones took over as head football coach.
At the time, athletic director Hugh Yoshida said, “That logo really put a stigma on our program at times in regards to its part of the gay community, their flags and so forth. Some of the student athletes had some feelings in regards to that.”
Feelings about the change were mixed. One former player said, “Being called the Rainbows, especially for men’s teams, left them open to ridicule. Warriors has a much stronger connotation.” Many gay rights groups were angry that the athletic director implied the school changed the name to appear “less gay.”
And then there were some that just hated the re-design they still currently wear, without a strong opinion on the name “rainbows.” Said one Hawaii native: “How ugly can you get! … This (new) logo has got to be the worst. How many people outside the islands will know that the design is an old Hawaiian kapa pattern?”
Despite a minor backlash, the Warriors haven’t looked back at the change, even though the coach that brought it in has already left. Granted, their unis are still some of the snazziest in college football. But considering the way the team has been struggling lately, it couldn’t hurt for them to try on some throwbacks for good luck.

Better pics of Louisville helmet, I like it. It looks like it's one sided, not sure if the other side is blank (looks like cardinal head goes too far onto the other side to fit another). If I was to change something, it would be symmetrical with a bird on both sides.
BTW, this is a mockup, don't expect to see them on the field too soon.Comment
