Update on the gold tabs on the NBA uniforms. 16 teams will be wearing the tabs on their jerseys... there are currently 17 franchises that have won championships. The hold out? The Oklahoma City Thunder who will not be repping the tab for the Seattle Supersonics' 1979 title (during the 35th anniversary year, no less). SMH, Thunder. SMH.

Why smh? They aren't the Sonics. Different ownership, different fans, different players. Most former Sonics want nothing to do with the Thunder. It would just serve to further piss off Seattle.

No SMH needed, they're doing the right thing. The fact that the team exists is a big enough slap in the face to Sonics fans.

I disagree. They have the Sonics' history, I think that the least they could do is recognize their roots. May help to repair some of the burnt bridges as well.

The Oklahoma City Thunder claiming the Sonics championship would do the opposite of repair the burnt bridges in Seattle.

                    This.

You want to talk about rubbing it in the noses of Seattle sports fans? That would be it. People over there are still pissed (rightly so IMO) that their franchise is gone, to have the Thunder wear a gold tab on their uniform and openly show an affiliation with that '79 team would just be further spitting on the fans in Seattle.

They technically don't have the Sonics history. It was agreed that if Seattle gets an NBA team again that the history of the Supersonics would remain in Seattle. Right now the Thunder can claim all of the Sonics history, but they have chosen not to and are basically a separate entity at this point.

I just read on a Sonics blog that Seattle had 5 years to get another team and reclaim the team's history before it became OKC's permanent property.

Obviously that 5 years is up, so the Sonics' history is officially OKC's now.

That said, I also read that OKC is constantly using logos and propaganda and such that say Established 2008 on it, so if they're really committed to building their own brand (and they seem to be), then not claiming the championship is smart.

The Thunder and Seattle have shared history, whether there is a team in Seattle or not

A fair argument, I suppose. As for the Seattle side of the situation goes, I guess it just seems kind of silly to me to hold a grudge on a whole franchise just for leaving. Things happen. If the Twins were to move (because they're the only franchise I support because they're local), I'd still be a loyal fan, maybe I'm stupid for that, whatever, but I'll stand by it. It feels the same to me as the Cavs fans being mad at Lebron four years ago for heading to Miami (and Heat fans now). It's nothing personal, it's just business. No city is necessarily entitled to having an NBA team, just as no city is entitled to owning a player's career.

And we're going to blame the team for that? Especially now that the team has new ownership who was in no way, shape or form responsible? I mean, don't get me wrong, it certainly sucked for them to leave the way they did and I do wish that the Seattle Supersonics were still a team, but I don't know, I think eventually people need to stop with the entitlement and understand that it's just business.

That's just my opinion of course, and you're more than entitled to yours. Perhaps being an outsider makes me unqualified to speak my thoughts on the whole situation. I don't think so, personally, but if you do, you are certainly entitled to see it that way. Anyhow, I think I've taken this thread far enough down the rabbit hole, let's head back on topic.
