Diet Coke overtakes Pepsi as the #2 Soda

Diet Coke Wins Battle in Cola Wars

U.S. sales of Diet Coke overtook those of Pepsi-Cola for the first time in 2010, making the diet soda the No. 2 carbonated soft drink in the country behind Coca-Cola, industry data are expected to confirm Thursday.

Occupying the top two rankings would mark a historic win for Coca-Cola Co. in its decades-old rivalry with PepsiCo Inc., which has seen its market share slip in recent years and is trying to retool its marketing.

The two companies have fought over the past decade to win market share from one another as cola sales overall have dropped.

Pepsi-Cola commanded only a slight lead over Diet Coke in 2009, when each brand had slightly less than a 10% market share among carbonated soft drinks. That year, regular Coke won the cola wars with a 17% market share, according to Beverage Digest, a trade publication and data service.

But market-share data to be released Thursday by Beverage Digest is expected to confirm Diet Coke pulled ahead in 2010.

Personally I am a Diet Pepsi fan(Diet Cherry Pepsi to be exact), but I found this really interesting. Here is the sad truth though, Pepsi is getting its butt kicked my Coke yet still makes billions of dollars, this world drinks entirely way too much soda.

I've cut out soda entirely for the past 10 days.(Lent)

It's the longest I've stuck to something in a long time. I used to drink 3-4 cans of DP/day. My doc told me he would rather me drink one can of coke vs the 4 cans of DP. He said the diet sodas are empty calories which helps trigger your brain to claim you still aren't satisfied and makes you hungrier. (based on the studies he's read.)

They showed the list on the news last night. DP was 5th though it is #1 in my book and it's not even close. I think the list was . . .

        1. Coke
        2. Diet Coke
        3. Pepsi
        4. Mt Dew
        5. Dr Pepper
        6. Sprite

Most diet drinks have 0 calories so I don't know where he's getting the empty calories thing from.

I drink either Diet Sunkist or Diet Sun Drop. I don't like drinking the caramel color diet drinks(Diet Coke, Diet Dr. Pepper, etc.).

I think what he means is that because it has zero calories his body isn't getting any fuel from it so he's still hungry.

Re: Diet Coke overtakes Pepsi as the #2 Soda

I think it's funny when someone drinks Diet Coke or any diet soda. Like it's healthy for you or something. I'm more concerned about the sugars, or rather the high fructose corn syrup, and the detoriation of teeth it causes. I read that they use Coke to wash the blood off the streets after car crashes. That's how acidic the stuff is.

I try to limit my soda intake but it's tough. Where I work it's either buy a soda or drink tap water. I usually opt for the tap water but sometimes I want flavor. If I haven't brought my own drink, I'm drinking a soda. But I can only finish half a 20oz bottle.

But that's not what this is about. I prefer Pepsi over Coke, actually. Coke is too heavy and syrupy. I just got a case of the throwback Mt. Dew with real sugar. I love the throwback Pepsi.

That's odd? I saw an HLN hit that said Coke Zero was #2.

                  I guess they were wrong.

You ever try the clear pepsi back in the day? that must've thrown you for a loop when you first drank it! (assuming you did)

I'm the exact opposite. I don't like clear pop. It's got to be a cola of some sort.

I drink Diet Dr. Pepper like it's going out of style, and I have for the past five years (since I found it in the fountains at college). The few times I've had Diet Pepsi, Wild Cherry Diet Pepsi, or Pepsi Max recently it seems like it gets flat REALLY quick. Diet Dr. Pepper holds that fiz for so long.

Well Dr Pepper is very strong in itself, even the diet kind. I think the strongest soda I ever had was Tab and Mr Pibb.
