    Rotating Shift Work

    Who has it?

Right now I'm coming off a 11:30 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. schedule and going to a 7:30 p.m. to 7:30 a.m. schedule so I'm staying up to get my body used to the hours. It's kinda boring and I'm on Mountain Dew #2.

Anyone else have experience with anything like this?

    Re: Rotating Shift Work

I used to do rotating shift work before the department went to regular shift work...But we work 8 weeks Fri 2030 hrs - Tues 0630 hrs...then work Mon 2030 hrs - Fri 0630 hrs for 8 weeks. Kinda sucks during football season, but at least working midnight you get to see the games before work when your working weekends. Plus every weekend is a 3 day weekend for us.

I was on 3rd shift (10pm-6am) and it was brutal. We would go in 28 day cycles with days off rotating every 28 days.

I lucked out and got a new position: 8am-4pm with Sat/Sun off!!

When I use to work in retail I had it bad. One day would be 11-8, next day 3p-8pm, following day 2-11p, following day 7am-4pm, following day. 9am-6pm.

It was like that for years, schedule days, hours would change every week. Along with the days off. One week I would have monday and thursday, following week tuesday and friday, following week wednesday and thursday.

            Re: Rotating Shift Work

I did it the last 4 summers. 7 days on, 1 day off, 7 days on, 2 days off, 7 days on, 4 days off.

            Shifts were 6-2, 2-10, 10-6.

Weirdly, night shift was my favorite. Work was slow, I got the most sleep on that shift for some reason, I loved it. I loathed day shift. I'd have to wake up at 4:45am every day, I hated it.

Overall, shift work kind of wipes me out. That particular style, where you worked 7 days in a row, I was exhausted by the end of it. And it is bleak when you start a new week, and know that you'll be working 14 of the next 15 days. There is no light at the end of that tunnel.

For sure, retail schedules can be ridiculous. I'd get off work at midnight sometimes and have to come in at 9am the next day, crap like that. It felt like I was there all the time, and each day would kind of bleed into another because of the erratic schedules.

Our shift is 530-530 switching from days to nights every other month. We used to switched every 4 days. Ugh that sucked.

i'm with Gotmadskills split shifts suck cause it ends up eating your whole day. Shift work in general sucks even when you get used to it. I worked as a restaurant manager it sucked either you were up at the crack of *** or at the end of the night, then the split in between. I never saw my family and I was always tired. now i work 8-5 and its lovely with one weekend a month 10-2

                      Re: Rotating Shift Work

I used to work 12 hour shifts 7 to 7.

4 day shifts, 4 days off, 4 graveyard shifts, 4days off.

It was terrible switching from morning to graveyard shifts every week. As soon as you got used to the shift you were on, the 4 days were over and it was tome to start adjusting to the other shift.

I had crazy schedules when I worked at a movie theater for 2 summers...

Can't imagine doing that type of thing long term. I'd work 12-close some days, rarely have weekends off, and get a day or two off during the week. It was fine for a summer job, but definitely like having a stable work schedule!
