    Chiropractor

Does anyone visit one? I've never seen one, but I am only 21. Been having a lot of trouble with my neck muscle that help rotate your neck locking up. Pretty much my entire body could use a full adjustment after years of sports and what not.

Any advice on what to get? An average price to pay? Will insurance chip in?

Ive had a chiropractor pop my ribs and neck for me, but never had full work done. I am the type that loves the feeling of stuff popping.

    Re: Chiropractor

I've visited one a few times, had acupuncture too. My back always gives me problems. I don't know, I got better but I'm not sure exactly how much the chiro actually helped. Felt like a total quack operation to me.

Insurance took care of mine, my guess is it may vary for different policies.

Damn ollie what happened to ya ? 1st it was feet problems now neck problems, your body breaking down at a young age.

But yeah it varies whether or not your insurance covers it. Some providers do, some don't. Out of pocket prices vary too, the lowest I seen was $75 the highest was $200.

        Re: Chiropractor

I think the neck is just from years of golf.

A guy in my brothers wedding party is a chiropractor and lived in the town I am now so I will be able to find one that is legitimately good from his recommendation. Hearing him talk there are some here in town who aren't that good and should have never picked this field. If it's a small person then they won't be very good at what they do because they can physically do what they need to do.

Going to a physical therapist would probably be better. They can do everything a chiropractor can do, but they also have more options. They are better at showing you what to do to stop the problems from coming back.

I had/have a back problem where I have pulled something every once in a while. 1 time I majorly meesed it up and dislocated a joint. I had to go to the doctor and then therapy. They were able to realign it and then show me how to strengthen stuff so it would happen again.

It seems to me that chiropractors want to keep you coming back, so they adjust you and then later you need another adjustment.

Agreed with the bold part, luckily my chiropractor does both.

The biggest advice I can give the OP is that you want someone who teaches you what you're doing wrong so you can have less issues and need less treatment/adjustments. My chiro had me go through my day-to-day, asked me about the work I do, exercise, the kind of car I drive, my bed, my couches, office chair, etc to help figure out what's causing harm. By being more conscious of what you do to irritate your body you'll be able to counter-act it more; obviously, not all situations are avoidable - as in my work - but with some proper mini-stretches, exercises, etc that don't take more than 2 minutes a day you can help you help yourself.

It's all my left side too, foot, neck and sometimes my calf lol my left foot is a little longer too

I got some dr. Scholl's sports inserts today. Didn't realize how floppy and pointless the ones that came with the shoe had become.

I wouldn't recommend a chiropractor. I went there twice when my back was out many years ago. I told the guy specifically not to crack my neck, but he did it anyway.

The stretching that he did on me felt good, but it was nothing a physical therapist couldn't do. The guy was a cook, he believed that if your spine was aligned you wouldn't catch colds or get other diseases. It basically seemed like a mix of physical therapy and Voo Doo.

You might as well just go straight for the physical therapy.

I have used them in the past and had mixed results as I type this though I am at a surgery center waiting to get an epidural for a herniated disk in my back. I have decided I will try out an orthopedic Dr to help with my back problems. But the last thing I want to hear is back surgery.

Not a big fan of chiropractor's as most of them are quacks out to make easy money.

Palmer College (a major chiropractic college) is right where I live and they get some of the biggest d-bags on earth to attend from all over the country.

I went to one once and he tried to get me on a monthly schedule. Never went back and found that hitting the whirlpool at my gym worked better.

It's hit or miss. There are some out there who are legitimately good at what they do, and others who capitalize on those guys reputation and probably don't do diddily squat for ya.

You're just going to have to give it a try. I went to one after I got into a car accident and I came away really impressed. My dad has been going to this guy for a few years now and its really helped him, but it wouldn't surprise me that what works for one doesn't work for another.

Well the guy I would go to was recommended by my buddy who is also a chiropractor. He has no problem saying if a guy sucks at it or not.

He said if a chiropractor is built like Alan from Two and a Half Men, then they might struggle to do what they need to do and you wouldn't benefit much from it.

I had that epidural Thursday and my back feels 100% better already. I am having no pain or any bad symptoms since Friday.

                            Re: Chiropractor

I was a major skeptic until I got invloved with a gal who's stepdad was a major player in the chiro field...

He was retired, but led me to a few guys who were good, but eventually I happened to meet his protoge, who was (also now retired) amazing...

Long story short, he took my badly herniated / ruptured L5 and kneaded it back into some sembalance of it's orignial shape over the course of a couple / few visits a week over a couple months...

Due to that, a few "tune ups" a year (by his talented brother) and a gym / core regimine, I have avoided risky surgery for almost a decade...

                            My take:

                            1) 3 out of 4 of these guys aren't worth the time, expense and trouble...seek and ye shall find, if you have the in road reccomends and the patience to try a couple guys until you're convinced you hit the jackpot...

                            2) Yeah, bigger is waaaay better...all three of the guys I mentioned (the stepdad, his protoge and the protoge's bro were / are all big dudes...6'4 plus, built like power forwards, big mitts...

I'm 6'0 / 180 or so, and these guys wrap me up like a grade schooler when they crack me into place...

                            3) The "neck thing" that they traditionally finish with is BS...I termed it the "Chiropractor's Handshake" and all three guys (pretty much) admitted that the point of it was to give the patient a head rush / lighted headed feeling of "wellness" that doesn't have anything to do with why most are there...

Former skeptic to passionate advocate, because I was lead (eventually) to the right guy...

                            Good luck!

I'd say avoid at all costs. Find a physical therapist to work with you. My wife went to a chiropractor for a messed up back, and if you stop going for your tune ups(adjustments) then you'll go back and a lot of times in worse shape. It's a money racket in my mind, as I've never met one that didn't tell you you'd need to come back 10-20 times for continued adjustments.

I'm sure that some people will swear by them, but I'd say stay your distance. You'll be hooked on going and if you stop going, then you'll often end up worse. Like one of the other posters said, find a good physical therapy, who can guide you on living a better lifestyle and not do these things to re-aggravate the injury.
