Maybe if people list what their job is I'll get some ideas.

What did you think you were going to do with those degrees? Why did you choose them? What do your counselors advise you to do with those?

As for me, I had a degree in economics and wanted to go do statistical research for the state. Job market was tough and the state cut back. So to make a long story short, I went back and got Bachelors in Accounting and Business Admin and a MBA in Finance.

I started out studying History because I really liked it and its a hobby of mine. I am glad I went the business route in the end, History is still a major hobby of mine, but I am glad I don't depend on it to pay the bills.

Heh, I have a Political Science degree (Philosophy minor) and am currently making my living as a medical marijuana reviewer, photographer, and consultant. So yeah, you never know where life will take you!

Also, I love how people tend to get Political Science degrees because they want to learn... isn't that wonderful? So much better than, "I need that MBA to get X job with Y Soul-less Corporation."

You can do all the learning you want with a $1 library card. Everyone should learn as much as they can about as much as they can, but as far as college degrees go, thats an investment, and your goal should be to get a return on that investment.

Don't get me wrong, if you can make a career out of your passion, that is what you should definitely do. But if you can't do that, you need to get a career that pays enough that you can pursue your passions in your free time.

Reading a book or getting knowledge on your own isn't the same as having those types of discussions and learning from people who are far smarter and more knowledegable than you directly. I understand your point, but knowledge for knowledge's sake is a noble thing, and those who seek it out in that sense normally find a way to make a living regardless, because they're in a different mindset than 90% of humanity at this point in history and represent a rare breed that tends to do well for themselves in the end. Someone who goes to college and gets the spark that creates a lifetime of learning and passing of knowledge to others who doesn't end up using that degree still arguably did more for the world than the person who just goes and fills a gap thanks to a degree rather than a deep abiding love for their job or subject of study.

The rare person that loves their study, gets a job in that field, and makes a healthy living doing things they love is the person who's truly living the dream and maximizing their potential. Making the choice to go to college and learning what draws you in rather than working along an almost pre-destined path with some career "pot o' gold" goal in mind seems much more pure to me, and I respect people that do that against societal (and normally familial) pressure to the contrary.

I don't use the material knowledge from my political science degree on a daily basis, but the critical thinking and communication skills that I developed thanks to all those conversations, essays, hours of research, etc. has helped me immeasurably in my career and all aspects of my life. I'm very thankful that I have my degree in political science even though I'm not "using it" in my career directly, because it's shaped the way I interact with and view the world and has made me a better person than I would have been had I not followed my intellectual nose to what interests me most.

And realistically, almost any 4 year degree is the same unless there are specific certifications that you need for certain jobs (i.e. going to school for IT and learning programming languages, etc.) -- the real differentiation comes in graduate and post-grad studies. Someone choosing a Political Science degree instead of a Business degree normally won't make the difference between them getting a job and not if they can demonstrate the required knowledge and skill set for that position regardless.

              Re: Your job?

I have a multiple subject teaching credential, a masters in education and I am a teacher at J Hall (best schedule ever)

I also have a masters in Mdiv ( theology degree) and was a executive pastor for ten years, before stepping down and going for a credential and masters in education.

Now I am going for a PHD in theology again.

My point is you can never go wrong with education.

Oh yeah I also have a B.A. in Christian Leadership and Biblical Studies.

I agree with everything you are saying. 90% of the learning and knowledge obtained in my MBA was conversing with others and understanding how they applied the principles to their real life scenarios. Reading a book full of formulas isn't going to get you anywhere unless you know how to apply them. But it is also possible to join societies and groups where you can get together and converse about things like history or other endeavors that will not cost you anything. The knowledge is out there if you seek it out.

I still view a college degree as an investment which you will hopefully get a positive return on. In the end, I am happy that I chose the path I have chose because it supplies me with an income that allows me to pursue my hobbies/passions such as History. I am fortunate enough to be able to travel to see the things I have wanted to see.

I guess it all boils down to doing whatever you need to do to continue learning and pursue your passions. Either you are very fortunate and can work in a field that is also your passion or you work in another field that supplies you with the resources either time or money to pursue what you want to do in your free time.

                  Re: Your job?

I get the glorious opportunity to hang out with Washington's convicted felons serving prison sentences five days per week.

For most of you, that's prison guard... It's not glorious, it's not always fun, but it pays the bill and my wife and son eat and I pay the mortgage and all of our other bills.

I am 29 and am going back to school and have the inside track on promoting, which could end up being a pretty damn good career for me money wise and schedule wise (Monday through Friday, off by 4 PM each day).

Like I said it's not glorious, but now I am merely paying some dues and will hopefully cash in on a bigger future.

It's anything but easy but it's where I'm at for now.

I work Monday-Friday 8am-3pm. And off one week every month the way I have my schedule set up (and getting payed for that time off too) so I think I will stay here as long as I can.

I feel you. I am a double major in Africana Studies/Sociology with a minor in Political Science. I want to get a doctorate and teach/perform research on inequality and politics at a major University. Working on getting into a sociology graduate school (a funded one is preferred), but I have many, many connections in political science through my mentor, so I may end up going that route.

Also, as far as the money thing, I am graduating in May while getting tuition free plus about a grand or so a semester. Thank you the government of Florida, the Federal Government, and USF.

3rd year high school science teacher. Decent pay. Don't recommend it unless you have a lot of patience and like working with kids.

But if you do, it's a fun job.
