I'm going on a road trip.. need some opinions.

A few friends and myself have decided to rent a vehicle and go on a three day road trip. I'm going to take off on a Friday, Saturday, and Sunday and go back to work Monday. The only question is, where to go ?

We have it narrowed down to

    A. Chicago
    B. D.C.
    C. Miami

I haven't been any further north than Tennessee/NC (if that counts) and wouldn't mind seeing some more of the north. The only problem is I don't know how the weather will be when we go.

I wouldn't mind checking out some of the Nation's capital. To those who are from the are, it may not seem much, but It's something I've never done and I wouldn't mind checking out. Miami seems to be the most popular response. It's not extremely far away and the weather should be nice. I've been to Florida on multiple occasions and been to South Florida, but I've never stepped foot in Miami.

Anyone want to give their opinion ? Which would you choose ?

I would avoid Chicago if you only got 3 days.....Midwest is famous for their road construction EVERY YEAR from spring to fall. Never fails, they always have it on the same freaking stretch of highway.

Plus nothing really goes on in Chicago in April anyway. If you want to go to Chicago, wait for the Taste of Chicago the end of June. That is a must go to event for everybody at least once in their life.

    DC......pretty cool spot too.

Miami......probably would be the most fun with the most favorable weather.

One thing to remember when going to Chicago....Almost everything cost about a dollar more in that city then it does in Alabama. From gas to bottle water to smokes.

At first, Chicago was the primary destination. I started looking at the weather this time of year and we decided to maybe go somewhere warmer. It's still on the table, but I doubt we go with it.. I'd still like to visit one day.

My money is on Miami, I was just hoping to get some insight into these places from some people who know more about them than me,

If you are driving from Alabama and only have 3 days, I wouldn't go to any of the places listed. You will be in the car for 2 of your 3 days.

Since you don't have a lot of time and it's April I would go to Miami. Chicago is a great city but it is further away from you and the weather isn't the best, it was just snowing over the weekend. DC was fun but the drive would be long from Alabama and you wouldn't have a lot of time to visit the sites.

If you ever take a road trip in the summer I would go to Chicago, there is always something going on.

You're missing the point of this road trip.

Miami, weather isn't too hot yet and it's not to the point where it rains every afternoon yet

I know part of the fun is the journey not just the destination... but how much fun can you really have driving for 13 hours to get somewhere, spend a day there and drive 13 hours to get back home.

                Let's see:

While driving: No Girls, No Beer, No TV... 3 strikes and you're out.

I like road trips also, especially the driving there part, but I also like spending time at my destination. I think that is what he is saying.

Miami = beach + beautiful women

Just go down to south beach an take in the nightlife.

So is the point to stay in the car the entire time? Because if you went to Miami I don't think you would have the time to enjoy the beach or night-life. It was just be driving there sticking a toe in the sand and driving straight back.

If I were you I wouldn't go any further than Orlando if your set on going to Florida. Hell, you've got Pensacola and Gulf Shores, AL just a few hours away. Other options are New Orleans or Atlanta. Those are two solid destinations that are close. If you go to one of those at least you'll get to hang out some. Well, unless the whole point is to avoid getting a hotel room, sleeping in the car, driving in shifts, etc.

Of the 3, I'd recommend DC. Lived close to DC for 2 years and loved it. Hated driving in DC though. The streets are way way way too small.

If you're taking suggestions I'd also say consider ATL. Depending on when you go you could take in a MLB game or NBA playoff game.

Yeah Jeremy makes a good point, it takes my mom 14-16 hours of straight driving to get from West Palm to Lafayette,LA. So going from AL that's basically just subtracting a few hours each way i'd assume.

Atlanta, NO, Pensacola, etc is still a decent amount of way to enjoy the trip but also enjoy the destination

                            Thanks for the advice.

I've been to Atlanta more times than I can count on my hands, so that's def. a no go. I did some research today, while nothing was going on at work. DC seems to be the furthest to navigate to, but also presents the best sights. Miami is a lengthy drive and I could pretty much get the same thing by going to Panama City, Tampa, etc.. but I've been to all of those places. Chicago is only about an 11 hour drive and I wouldn't mind watching a game at Wrigley. I work with a guy who's from there and I consulted him on it. The only downside is the whopping 400 + mile stretch of driving that runs through Tennessee and Kentucky. Nashville would be along the way and it's one of my favorite cities, but after that.. pretty boring until you get to Chicago. The drive to DC seems to have the best sights along the way and the most to gain. I've never been and I wouldn't mind checking out the monuments.. just to say I have.

I'm going to do a little more research and present my case to my friends. After feeling like Miami was the way to go, I've started leaning in the direction of Chicago a little more. The drive to either three is roughly the same, give or take an hour or so, but that's not my main concern. It's not a vacation, I'm not looking to spend a week anywhere.. just a day or so. With four able bodied drivers, it's something that would be easy to do in three days (maybe even four).

Everyone needs to visit D.C. at some point in their life. Although 3 days is not nearly enough and probably wouldn't be worth it. I did 3 FULL days of sight seeing and only got to half of what there is to do. White House tour is really lame btw.
