    Photoshop activists, need assistance (removing black background)

    I need to utilize this Inception logo but be able to make an animated background with this (having the words in front obviously), but I can't do that since the black background and title foreground are technically the same layer. Does anyone know how to apply something so that you can cleanly eliminate the black background in this image?

    I see where it might slightly be an issue because on the sides it kind of gives you a third dimension to work with, one which slightly blends in with the background. I suppose if in doubt keep that dark part of the image, but if anyone else can help me out otherwise that would be fantastic.

    If it would end up looking too messy removing some of the black and not all of it, I absolutely wouldn't mind keeping the black that's inside any of the letters as long as it's cleanly removed on the outside (except inside the O and the P).

    Oh, and if you returned it as a 1600 x 900 PNG file that would be superb also. Thanks in advance!

    I don't have photoshop on this PC or I would do it myself. If you have photoshop, just use the magic wand tool. The shortcut is 'W'. Try setting the tolerance to about 32. Click anywhere in the black and it should select any black that is touching the black where you clicked. So you will have to do it separately for the insides.

      I did that, it still doesn't seem to give a clean outside and even then it really gets a whole lot of the inside. I wasn't sure if other people were just "better" at this than I was.

        Try using the magnetic lasso tool. Zoom in and just take your time.

        There is no secret to it that I have found. I didn't notice that the letters were like a maze and all of the black was connected.

        Since it's mainly block letters, you could trying using the lasso tool that lets you draw a straight line(polygonal tool I think). Start the line at the bottom left of the I. Go up directly on the letter and just go on past it. Click to make a new point, go to the LEFT, make a new point, go down to where you are even with the bottom point then double click. This will make a big box on the left side of the letter and basically clear out the left side of the 'I'. Repeat for each side.

          @Blzer
          I tried to pull as much as possible from this one that I could. It is a little bit more difficult since the logo isn't a straight on shot and has a light pointed at it (see the center P and T) which causes a lot of shadow and depth issues on the outside edges, but I tried to do the best I could with this version of the image.

          If this doesn't work, let me know if you find a cleaner version of the logo. Or if you'd like, I saved the working file with alpha channel if you want to take another crack at it.

            Thank you sir, that should do!

            But do you have an original 1600 x 900 version?

              Sorry about that, I thought I had kept it at the original ratio. I've attached a new one as well as a couple "clean" versions that I did as too, in case they might come in handy.
