My Quads Hurt After I Run.

So I have just recently started to run again, I used to do track and cross country in high school (for the record I'm 21). Anyway, my quads feel fine when I jog but hurt really bad after I sprint.

O and I stretch for about 15 minutes before and after along with a short warm up.

I went through the same thing running on the treadmill except it was my shins that hurt. Your legs just aren't use to the pounding yet. Just keep jogging for a while to get your legs use to it then slowly work your way into sprints.

I'd say try jogging more before you stretch. I usually like to walk a bit(If I am completely cold) and work it into a slow jog. Stretch some. Then do a fast jog. Then I will sprint.

Same for me. My shins hurt like hell but after while, when you get back into shape its all better. I would imagine it would be the same for your quads.

I had the same problem when I started running again. I would actually stretch them. I ran in a gym and could stand on one leg, and put my other leg on a stage and sit on it and lean back as needed to stretch my shin muscle.

            speed-walking builds up the shins.

edit: make sure you are stretching before you jog, and about 2 minutes into the jog/run stop and stretch again. then finish the run. also stay hydrated.

What kind of stretching are you doing?

There's debate over whether "static stretching" (standing still and reaching to a body part) is actually productive or not. A strong vain of thought says it increases flexibility but doesn't decrease injuries. Many people would suggest warming up the muscles by walking or with a light jog. You could probably even do some lunges and such to warm up your hamstrings.

I read a few years back that static stretching is similar to stretching a rubber band: you're only making the rubber band (your muscles) weaker and less dependent.

Do some research on it and see if you buy it... lol... I dunno. It's just a thought.

I static stretched my whole life to this point and never had any issues. I no longer static stretch before physical activity and still have never had any issues.

I wouldn't worry about it. You are probably just experiencing lactic acid build up which usually subsides after about 2 weeks.
