Can You "Quit" a job right before you get fired?

What I mean is...Say you get called into your bosses office and he tells you that you're being let go. Can you just get up and say "No. I quit."?

That way on any job hunt you can say that you quit, instead of fired?

Just wondering because this new guy has been on all of the employees behinds at my job and let a few go. Then I receive a text saying that he needs to see me in person. Don't know what for. But if it is to fire me, I'd rather not have that on my record.

So is there anything that one can do to circumvent that?

Go in, say you quit. If he looks puzzled, shoot him the gun and say "gotcha"

I wouldn't recommend quitting. If he fires you, you will be eligible for unemployment. If you quit, you can't get those benefits. Plus since he has let several people go, you can say you were a victim of downsizing, without it being a lie.

If you quit, you will have no chance of collecting unemployment.

If you get fired, you will at least be able to appeal for unemployment and give your side of the story.

Not sure if that's even a concern, but it's something to keep in mind.

I would never quit unless you already have another job. You can do anything you want when they are going to fire you and they would rather you quit because they don't have to pay unemployment. If they fire you, then their insurance my go up if they have fired a lot of people. You could talk about a deal for you to quit so they don't have to pay for unemployment and can pay you a lump sum.

You have to be careful, though. If they fire you for cause, your unemployment can be denied if the company cares enough to fight it.

If the company wants to fight it, anything against company policy can have you denied. No matter what job and what role, I always keep a folder that can be copied to a flash drive, or an actual paper notebook so I can document any and everything that goes on between me and supervisors or subordinates

If you have reason to fire someone, they can deny it. You get sent a letter from the unemployment office and they ask why you fired him and if he had been giving warnings or what not. Then when it get's denied you laugh and laugh.

If you are worried about future interviews, tell the prospective employers you were let go along with several other people in your department.

Sounds like a cost cutting measure.

I was fired as a result of downsizing, I just tell people I was laid off, its not really a big deal. Since I have a pretty solid work history I dont really worry about it.

Getting laid off will look better to potential employers than quitting when you didn't have another job lined up.

lol @ bout 35 seconds it gets relevant.

im the same way, I was in the military for over 8 years, got a job, worked there for 3 months and the company basically shut down. Certainly me not "getting the job done" was a reason the company was "failing" but theres a difference between that and not showing up and being a problem for 2 years before they eventually let u go or something.

This is sort of off topic, but I got fired from a job a couple of years ago. It had nothing to do with me not complying to rules, attendance, or anything of that nature. I simply did not meet my quota for the month (sales job). So anyway, whenever I apply for jobs, in the box where they ask why did you leave your last job (resigned, terminated, laid off, etc), I always put terminated because it was the truth. Now my question is, does it really matter if I say I got laid off? Termination makes it seem like I was doing something wrong, and there's really no way for them to check anyway because my supervisor no longer works for the company. I just feel like the fact that I got fired from my last REAL job has been the reason I haven't had much luck finding work.
