RIP William "Bill" Lane Jr. (Heartbreaking Story)

Foreword: I do not personally know this man, and all of the information I have been given was forwarded to me by my girlfriend, who worked with him since 2006. However, she knew him since she was a little girl since her mother used to work at the same store. I have written this to open the eyes of people who do not have to deal with medical differences on a daily basis to show how something as simple as a change of plans can alter a life. I personally relate deeply to this story as I have Asperger's Syndrome, a form of autism. I can completely relate to how this man felt and would do anything to change the outcome if I had the chance. I write this to you as a plea to be a better person than you already are, because someone's life may depend on it. That said, I give you the story of William Lane Jr.

William Lane Jr. was a man that most employees would love to be around. The kind of guy who would take any hours, and would go out of their way to put a smile on someones face even when he could not be happy himself. He had worked at a grocery store called Price Chopper, which those of you near Albany, NY may have heard of (I'm not sure how far the store reaches as a chain). He had been an employee there since he was 18, in 1989, a loyal person even when those around him jump ship for a chance at a better living. You see, Bill Lane was autistic. He was incredibly intelligent, but his medical condition made it difficult for him to express such things in a manner you or I would consider "normal", as is common with autism. Another thing about autism that I can tell you from personal experience is when you make an autistic person upset, it literally crushes their entire being. Every fiber in their body is broken up over what the average person may be able to accept and move on from...Which brings me to the actual story itself.

Bill Lane requested time off from work very rarely...He almost never took vacations, and always showed up to his shifts. He worked at the same job for 22 years, doing the same thing, at the same times. However, in the beginning of May, he put in a request for a week of vacation three weeks ahead of time, just as the rules state he has to. Originally, his supervisor was fine with this, and you could tell from the look on his face that he couldn't wait to finally get some time to enjoy life without stress. About a week later, his supervisor told him that she had changed her mind and that his vacation request was denied. For the next two weeks, he seemed to change. The happy person everyone became used to started to drift away, being replaced by a shell of a defeated man.

On May 31, 2011, at the age of 41, William E. Lane Jr committed suicide. He hung himself in a depression over losing his only time to himself, after such a long period of loyalty. The worst thing about this isn't why it happened, it is that it was such a preventable death. All he wanted was a week off, a chance to breathe and regroup. I hope that Bill can rest easy knowing he never has to go back to a place where he isn't treated the way he deserves to be.

I'd like to quote my girlfriend by saying "I hope he is in a place where every day is a vacation, because if anyone deserves it, it's him".

I have attached the obituary that was posted on the internet. Rest In Peace Bill Lane, and God Bless.

I've contemplated suicide, you have to be in a deep dark place to really consider that. I cant imagine what exactly he was thinking and telling himself. Idk how much autism affects that.

I'm an *******. In the last 6 months I've tried to work on not being such a jerk so my words dont end up being what pushes someone over the edge. Reading this, will actually reinforce that.

I feel really bad right now about some stuff I used to do.

There was a kid at my HS, he was in a few of my classes my junior year. He had some autism, but for the most part he was a normal guy except he was a bit socially awkward. Didn't really get it like when a girl wasn't into him when to everyone else it was obvious, didn't understand sarcasm, etc.

He was really big into sports so we'd talk about that a lot in class. However I used to mess with him a lot and I mean a lot, nothing really mean just more of a friendly thing but I did it too much prolly. Other people used to do the same thing to him but worse, talk behind his back, etc. This story truely makes me bad for being apart of some of that and for not saying something to other people.

Wow, there was some serious things going on in his life and I guess the vacation issue was the final straw. Sad stuff.

The manager was sorry to deny it. He had been there 22 years and his vacation was already approved.

            Yeah.

No one will know what was going through his head, but we know that the person who denied his vacation will have to live with that burden forever.

Unfortunately the manager will have to live with that. Remember you don't know the reason why his vacation was denied.

I am sure there was other things involved beside the vacation. Sad story and my prayers go out to his family and friends.

Re: RIP William "Bill" Lane Jr. (Heartbreaking Story)

Unfortunately, I just see this as a situation where the wrong action was simply done to the wrong person, and nobody is to blame for this. Reading the OP, I expected to get a story that would end more on the lines of something like an April Fool's Day joke gone wrong where his supervisor said he couldn't have his vacation, just to mess with him. Although this wasn't the case, I'm sure there wasn't any intention of getting to him and denying his break because he was a vulnerable person.

I don't know the reasons for why it wasn't approved in the end (although it was promised initially), but it seems it will be just as hard for this supervisor to live with this guilt on his head thrown on him by people like us, when this would simply fly under the radar had there not been any repercussions as a result of his actions. I don't want to go off-topic, but take this Buster Posey injury for example. The baserunner hit him like players hit catchers every other day, and he had validity for wanting to dislodge the ball. If Posey isn't injured on the hit, no one would ever talk about it the next day. Now Cousins (the baserunner) is under scrutiny and the MLB is considering revising the rules for plays at the plate because of this. Same thing kind of applies here: now this supervisor, and everyone else who knew the guy (including posters on here), are now suddenly going to think three times before making choices that they think will haunt them if they go against the grain.

Though there is a fly in the ointment with what I'm saying, and the difference here would be if he was tantalized purposefully (as the April Fool's example I gave above). I've never personally dealt with someone who has Asperger's, but I'm on another message board where I knew someone who has it, and people purposefully posted things that they knew would get a rise out of the kid, leading to him being banned because of what some of his angry posts would say, etc. Now maybe a social Internet forum isn't the best place for him anyway, but I don't know how these guys can sleep well at night, knowing that they are pulling at the strings of a ventriloquist dummy. You know exactly what you're going to get out of him by saying certain things to him. Unless we hear differently, I don't think his supervisor had any negative intent toward what he did. Obviously this isn't really as much of a thread about suicide because William wasn't exactly in the right state of mind anyway, but if he was simply doing it to send a message, I think it's gotten across. Hopefully it doesn't go back to the supervisor in ways that he doesn't deserve either, though.

That being said, I feel bad for the guy. I can't imagine doing what he does for as long as he has. I know what it's like to be underappreciated and undermined at work, but that's for 20 years less than he's ever done a job. I think [obviously] that he deserved this vacation, and his suicide was an unfortunate outcry that he decided to take into action. This kind of job must not have made him the happiest person ever, even if he hadn't shown it before... but his denial must have just taken him over that edge, as was stated he hadn't been the same two weeks prior to his death. If this was his way out, I don't suppose it was in anyone's right to stop him. Though if it was preventable by granting him that vacation, I'm sure even those who meant no harm would seek that opportunity in hindsight and turn it around eight days a week. I don't think anyone here denies that, but I just don't think we should instantly reprogram our mindsets because this "came out of nowhere."

Yes, we undoubtedly always should think about how we're treating others. Obviously given the proper circumstances, I would have granted him his long-deserved vacation, but it wouldn't be under the pretenses that he is an A.S. carrier and he would be prone to harming himself if I hadn't. I would only make sure not to take advantage of his situation for my own distasteful pleasure. That's the main message I want to get across here... people's disabilities or abnormalities (this includes the homosexual minority) are not to be provoked out of sheer ecstasy, or things like this are certainly bound to happen. Although it doesn't seem to be, I certainly hope this wasn't the case here.

This is just a massively unfortunate series of events. I can't blame the manager for it since for the average person it would be no big deal. Don't think anyone could've seen it coming.

How many years had hr worked there? 1st time asking for a vacation. Autism or not, he should've gotten the vacation.

He should've gotten it but blaming the manager for his death is insane.

I don't really know much about autism, but the onus ultimately falls on everybody that noticed these changes and did nothing. The warning signs were there. I'm just curious how severe his autism was.
