Forgive me, but you choose to work there. They need someone to work, so why not you? I could understand if you have seniority over someone who has it off, but those details are not available to us.

Every job I've ever had, except my current one, had me working weekends and holidays. It sucks, but it's a free society, and if you don't like it, you can bounce. I hate to be that guy, but it's really the truth.

Yeah, it sucks. Everyone wants the cool holidays off. But the bottom line is that you're working and a lot of people would probably love to be in the predicament that you're in.

Please don't take offense... But if it's a huge deal, you can walk bro.

Again, you miss the point completely. I have NO, I repeat, NO problem working on the holiday. It's the fact they only want to give me 8 hours the entire weekend. There are not a lot of people who would want to give up an entire holiday weekend to make 70 bucks.

I've never been a big fan of short shifts either. I'd rather work 16 hours than 4.

I see your problem, two short hour shifts sandwiching a holiday so you can't really go anywhere. I'd be annoyed too. But that's the way it goes, work sucks.

I would talk to your boss or another co-worker to see if someone picks up your shift or talk to your boss about getting more hours. If you have to work, you might as well get more hours. 4 hours would suck. If you feel like you can get another job and spending 4th of July with your family is more important then your current job you can always quit I guess. Life just isn't fair sometimes, but I hope it works out for you.

4 hours on Saturday........4 hours on monday........that's nothing.

When I did retail I had to work the whole day of 4th of July, Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve.

So be lucky you working 4 hours Saturday, have sunday off and 4 hours monday.

My bad man. When they wanted me to work a shorter shift, that was the final straw that led to me quitting my job at the airport, so I know where u coming from.

Gotta do what you gotta do, it's just what happens in retail. When my dad was a gamestop manager he had to go to work the day after Christmas which made us never really go on vacation, he had to work about 12 hours shifts on my sister's 1st bday cause it was 2 days after christmas,etc

Its really not a beef more than you got screwed. Unfortunately that's the way it goes. nothing worse than going in for a four hour shift and get sent home or do nothing. And for whom ever said it will go fast it wont.

Someone was nice enough to switch with me. So I go in Monday afternoon instead. Lake here I come! Still wish I didn't have to work Saturday, I have to make a 4 hour drive by myself now, at least I'll be off at noon and it pays for my gas.

Yeah, and it's funny because it goes both ways.

Some people complain because they were schedule long shifts on the holiday/holiday weekend meaning they "have no time to enjoy it."

Some people complain because they weren't scheduled enough time on the holiday because they want time and a half.

And then there's instances like this where someone just doesn't like the placement/length of their shifts.

We usually just do a sign up sheet for holidays to make it fair and limit the complaining. And the shifts that aren't signed up for are filled through a random drawing amongst the people who didn't sign up.


I'm working all day Sat, Sun and Mon with no time and a half pay and haven't thought twice about it. I'm the idiot working retail which means I have to deal with it.

I'd be fine if I was scheduled 24, even 16 hours. I don't get time and a half either.
