    Rossetta Stone

Has anyone ever learned a language with this? I always see commercials for it, and I for some reason got motivated to learn a new language. I took some spanish in HS, but that was a long time ago so it's all gone.

How long does it take to get the basics of the language down?

Depends on the person and the language. Some languages, 2 weeks, others a couple of months.

I've thought about trying the free trail version they offer, but never really looked into it.

Seriously depends on the language. A friend had purchased Rosetta Stone and loaned it to me, so i tried it. It was Japanese, and it just didn't quite work out. Japanese is just so different, the program doesn't, or can't really translate to you exactly how the sentences work, or more importantly why things are unless you have previous knowledge, or go to an external source to learn why.

Now for learning objects, and numbers, colors, etc. It was absolutely fantastic, it does a great job of really driving vocabulary home, making sure you know what's what. It just struggles when it comes to teaching vastly different sentence structures, and grammatical differences.

I am on Level 5 German right now. I wouldn't say that I am fluent in German now but I can express most of my thoughts and I would be confident in my ability to communicate in German. If you are like me, I do recommend doing some grammar studies on your own to really understand why things are the way they are.

I plan on continuing my German studies when I finally finish Rosetta Stone in hopes of getting my German Language Certificate. I hope to be moving to Germany next year.

            Glück Auf!

EDIT: One more thing, I found doing at least some learning every day really makes a big difference when learning a new language.

I did a few of the Vietnamese ones for a couple weeks and learned quite a bit (pronouncing the words correctly was another story). I'm sure if I had stuck with it I would have learned the language pretty well, I just lost motivation to keep at it.

I would love to try one of these, but they are a little too expensive for my taste. Sure, if you think about all the courses etc you would have to take to learn a new language they might not be that expensive, but not knowing how well it works, it;s a lot to throw down at one time.

You have to wait until they offer the special pricing and payment plan. i.e. $499 for Levels 1-5 and 5 no-interest monthly payments with free shipping.

That's only $100 a month with isn't nearly as tough to stomach.

This completely. I took some Japanese in college, and then I tried out the rosetta stone for it. Without my previous knowledge of the language it would have been very frustrating.
