It is about having good peripheral vision. Especially acting like your "looking around the class/work area" or "looking at the ceiling" or "looking at the wall"
There's also the look-that-way-in-anticipation move. "I was looking that way already".

The transition to spandex shorts was the best thing ever for women's volleyball. The amount of guys from my school that supported our girl's volleyball team was ridiculous. They were pretty good, though...
