    GameStop emails...

Mods sorry if this is in the wrong spot, please move as you see fit, I did a forum search and couldn't find it in here or in the Entertainment/Technology section.

So today I received an email from GameStop saying I had unused credit. So I called them up and they said that I had previously pre-ordered a game called "Dark Spore" for PC. I just moved to this area about 10 months ago, that game came out like a year ago and I don't own a PC that could run that game; I was confused.

Just to check, I went back into my bank records to see if they had taken the $53.11 out of my account at some point. I couldn't find it. I looked through some old GameStop receipts and to no avail, I couldn't find where they charged me that amount.

I'm sure some old sap is going to come in one day thinking he has $53.11 to spend on a game. I feel bad taking someone else's money, but if he has a receipt I'm sure they can hook him/her up. Plus, if they raise enough stink, GameStop will/should honor their request.

Ethically, I should call GameStop and say I never pre-ordered that game and that's not my money, but how many times have they screwed us customers over? Not sure what happened, but I put toward NCAA Football '12 that I previously wasn't going to buy because I didn't have the extra cash.

I have a screenshot of the email, but I can't figure out how to get it on here. Anyone else ever get these emails?

I get emails telling me I have credit, but I know that the credit is from prior transactions I've had with them.

Interesting situation, I'm not sure what to tell you.

The ethical people will tell you to tell the truth. The ones that don't feel that way will tell you to spend the money.

None of those people are you. Your choice. I won't look at you any differently because it really doesn't concern me.

Gamestop should ask for a receipt when you walk into the store. If they don't, well then, I'm not sure what they're doing in that place.

And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

Right on, it's a tough choice...but I'm going to go with it and use the money. Maybe it's karma coming back my way, I've had a few rough months recently, lol

Well bro it is your choice. But if it was me I would be honest and say it ain't my money or let them know. But again it's your choice and no one else can decide for you.

Sorry but imo its ridiculous to use money knowing full well it isnt yours and trying to justify it by saying Gamestop has stuck it to you over the years is a joke since youre not sticking it to them, youre sticking it to some poor sap out there who is going to lose the store credit he has. Sure, he can bring in a receipt and try and prove he had credit at some point in the past but what does that prove? How does that prove he didnt use it and is trying to pull a fast one? In other words, I seriously doubt Gamestop is going to just give him the money because he swears he didnt use it.

Even if the OP doesn't use it, the money is on HIS account. The guy isn't going to be screwed based on the fact the OP sent it. If they can prove that this is the guys money and the OP spent it, they will credit the guy. If they can't prove it, it will be because their records are not good enough and because the guy doesn't have a receipt.

I'd spend it. It's not like the guy dropped $50 coming into the store and you picked it up and didn't give it back when he went to pay for a game at the counter.

Ohh and how are they going to prove someone else spent it? Its not like they check for ID at the counter, its a game store. He knows it isnt his so I still fail to see where honesty isnt the best policy. You spin it however you want to make you feel better but in the end hes spending money that isnt his and whether its in his account or not has no bearing on this.

I never said honesty was not the best policy.

You said he would be screwing some poor sap out of his credit, which he wouldn't be, he has no effect on if this guy gets his credit back. On the conscious side of it you are right he should probably tell them about the error, on the technical side you have no clue. I am failing to see where the checking of ID comes into play. It's not like he was given access to this guys account and he would be stealing his identity.

I've had them email me with some credit that I hadn't used. The only difference is, it was mine when I had relocated, and they ended up verifying my email, phone number, and OL that was on file for trading some games in and reserving NBA 2k11, ended up sending me an online gift card that I could print out and take to my local GS.

I'm not sure what to tell you. I mean, they have your email on file for some reason. I'm not sure how they came to the conclusion that it was your money. Doesn't sound right to me. I wouldn't take it, but that's just me. You do what you do man.

I brought up the ID part of it because if they arent checking it then there is nothing stopping someone from using their credit and then going back in when a different employee is working and stating that someone else used it, pulling out a receipt to show they had it at some point, and abusing the system, and for that reason alone there would be nothing the guy could do to prove he didnt use it. Taking that into consideration Im guessing that if the rightful owner of that credit were to ever show up to use it, he would be told there is nothing they can do for him as the credit was used and that guy is just SOL. Now how its been linked to this guy is beyond me, maybe its by phone number and their numbers are similar enough that the other guys credit was put on the wrong account, no idea but that doesnt change what I would do in this situation.

We live in the same area according to your information under your username. I did lose my GameStop card too since I forgot to take it back from the cashier after trading in games. I didn't preorder Dark Spore though. That credit will be gone forever.

They can view his account history. If he was never correcty credited with an amount then he isn't going to lose it if he has a receipt. It's like when you deposit a check in the bank puts it in the wrong account. If that person spends that money then it's not like you are SOL. The poor sap is going to be ****ed over based on how GameStop chooses to react. The OP spending the credit has ZERO to do whether or not this guy gets screwed.

I guess I just don't feel bad that the OP is getting a free $50 from GameStop.

Few things are free in life and you should take it when presented to you. In this case nothing will come back to hurt you. Do the right thing and treat yourself to a free game.
