Re: Army amputee thrown from roller coaster, dies
I'm confused. Did him not having legs allow this to happen or is this just a huge coincidence?"It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

Re: Army amputee thrown from roller coaster, dies
Wow, very tragic.
His medical condition probably played a role. Without legs, he probably didn't fit as tightly in the car and was unable to brace himself properly. I would also assume this roller coaster had a simple lap bar restraint which would have made it easier for someone missing their legs to slide out when the coaster is going downhill at a rapid rate of speed, especially if he wasn't holding on to the lapbar with his hands. I am inclined to say that a person with no legs should never have been allowed to ride a rollercoaster with a simple lapbar restraint. Probably would've been fine if it was an over-the-shoulders restraint.Steelers : IX, X, XIII, XIV, XL, XLIII

This is the coaster and I agree, he shouldn't have been allowed on the ride. I don't know how someone working there would have thought it would be fine. I can't tell if the leg restraint is an individual one or if is shared with the person next to them. If it is shared, he wouldn't have had anything basically keeping him in the car.

Ya.... but can you see it now in this day and age? The worker doesn't allow it and runs the risk that this guy and his family sue the park for discrimination.
Remember, a lady spilled hot coffee on herself from McDonald's, sued and won.Comment

I could see them suing Intamin, the company that built Ride of Steel, as well as the park.Comment

Re: Army amputee thrown from roller coaster, dies
What really got me was the fact he survived Iraq, even though he lost his legs.
He was probably just out to have a good time and forget the horrors of war, then this happened.
I'm still shaking my head over this...Comment

I used to live in that area and I had a friend tell me that they were there four hours before the accident occurred. Sad story...I pray for the family. To survive Iraq only to pass while riding a roller coaster...a damn shame...Comment

Big difference. There are height requirements for reasons as well, and we're not discriminating against midgets. Re: Army amputee thrown from roller coaster, dies
Losing a leg in Iraq does not make you smart, so if you were stupid before you lost your leg, chances are you will be stupid after you lost it. Yes Serving in Iraq and coming away with less legs than you started is certainly admirable but going on a roller coaster without legs is about as stupid of a thing one could possibly do.
Since everyone is always looking for someone to blame I guess Six Flags could come away as responsible for not having(or following through) a policy about amputees. Even if Six Flags is responsible, this guy should have had a little self preservation in him.My dog's butt smells like cookiesComment
